GNOME publishes the first anonymous data of its users, among the news this week

This week in GNOME

The telemetry collection is something that we may like more or less. When this type of information is requested from me by a project related to Linux, at first I think about my privacy, but soon I change my mind and I think that they are going to act in good faith, call me naive. GNOME has been collecting anonymous information from users who have wanted to share it, and a few hours ago they published the first conclusions.

To my surprise, in this link we can see a list with distributions that use GNOME the most, and Ubuntu remains in third position with 10.61%. In second position is Arch Linux, with 18.64%, both far from the 54.69% that Fedora remains. That Fedora is in first position is not so surprising, since it is the most popular distribution that respects the desktop the most, but Arch Linux is a bit more surprising.

Among other data, they have also published that Lenovo is the brand that uses GNOME the most, and just over 40% do not include any online account. Of these, Google wins by far, and this is not surprising since it is the one behind its own services, and also an Android that is based on them.

New this week in GNOME

What you have next is the News list they posted this week.

    • It now uses GTK4 and libadwaita.

  • New app, Sudoku Solver. It is a Sudoku solving app that is written in rust using GTK4, libadwaita and blueprint. The interesting thing about this application (link to flathub) is that it was developed with the intention of learning the technologies behind GNOME and getting familiar with Rust. A bit like it has ever crossed my mind, that if I keep advancing in languages like Python or C++ and feel encouraged, I could upload my own app to Flathub... who knows (I already know that I don't...).
