GNOME Weather, Ubuntu's Meteorology app will improve a lot soon

GNOME Weather or Meteorology app

As I read a long time ago in a report from one of the most famous mobile application stores, one of the most downloaded types of apps is the one that is related to time. From what it seems, I am not the only one who likes to know what the weather is going to do, in my case I look at it especially when I am going out to do a route with my bike. The success of this type of mobile application has encouraged desktop app developers to create their own versions for computers, among which we have GNOME Weather.

The one in spanish it is known simply as Meteorology it's going to improve a lot in the near future. Currently, the application has significant shortcomings, something that one of its designers found a "shame" considering its prominence and integration with GNOME Shell. If you use the application, you will realize that it is true that it could offer more possibilities, from the outset an icon on the tray / dock with which we could know what the weather is outside just by taking a look.

GNOME Weather will change completely

The features that GNOME Weather offers right now are basically show the time of the zone we are in (or configure) the day, the next day and an overview of the rest of the week. That's all. All this will change in the future thanks to the work of Allan Day, Jakub Steiner and other Meteorology designers, to begin with, redesigning practically the entire app. The new GNOME Weather app will display information in a more intuitive way. In the following image we can see a design concept created by Allan Day:

As you can see, the new GNOME Weather will display pages horizontally. If you are thinking that you do not like the design, note that the design change does not include an increase in the size of the window, but we can go through the information pages by clicking on the circle with the arrow that will appear on the sides of the main window. Another novelty will be something that we have seen in many weather apps: the current app already shows what temperature and time it will be each hour, but the new version will show a graph with the temperature much more aesthetic at the same time that it facilitates its reading.

GNOME Weather is available from the Ubuntu Software Center as Meteorology, as we have explained previously. If we want to install it with the terminal, we will have to write the following command:

sudo apt install gnome-weather

If you don't love what's already available right now, be patient. Soon we will have an application that will be worth it.
