GNOME working on new 2D gestures that will work on touch screens, and more this week

2D gestures in GNOME Shell

The gestures of GNOME 40 were what in English they call a “game changer”, that is, a function that changes things. Since then, as long as you're on Wayland, you can switch between desktops or pull out the app drawer by moving your fingers on the trackpad. As if that wasn't enough, this week they announced that they are working on more gestures, and they will work on both normal screens via the touchpad and on touch screens.

That was the first of the novelties that published yesterday, and the new thing is that it will allow switch between workspaces from the same overview gesture. Basically, what will be achieved is that you can enter the general view and, without raising your hand, go to the workspace you want. Right now you have to make three gestures, with one you enter the general view, with another we move to the workspace and with the third we enter it.

This week in GNOME

In addition to the new gesture, GNOME has told us about these changes:

  • Fixed issues where in some constellations the GTK4 file/folder picker wouldn't allow you to save a file or select a folder.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred with new versions of libffi in GJS.
  • Shortwave 3.0 has been released with tweaks to the interface, among other new features that can be read on our blog, brother Linux Adictos.
  • Commit 3.2.0 has arrived with:
    • Improved automatic capitalization.
    • Added support for gitconfig and hgrc.
    • Support for editing any file.
    • Made the label of the primary button dynamic (Tag, Rebase, Commit, …).
    • Use a 2-space indent.
    • Added menu button.
    • Uploaded to GNOME 42.
    • Various fixes.

  • Login Manager Settings 0.5.2 has added mouse settings, improved support for right-to-left (rtl) languages, and other translations have been improved. Besides, has arrived on Flathub.
  • Furtherance 1.2.0 now includes a “Pomodoro” type countdown, and a bug with changing the date of a task when it is the only task in a group has been fixed.
  • amberol has made some UI tweaks that improve the playlist queue. But the most important thing is that the loading of the songs is more reliable and the app should not close when switching from one to another.

And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
