GParted is a partition editor, the application us allows, create, delete, resize, inspect and copy partitions, as well as the file systems found on them. When making any changes to the hard disk, the application will not perform any action until the user indicates the option to "Apply changes", this in order for the user to make sure of the changes they wish to make.

GParted uses the GNU Parted library to detect and manipulate partition tables and devices, as well as various filesystem tools maintain those not supported by libparted.

How to install GParted on Ubuntu?

Ubuntu has the default application so if you want to update to the most current version, you just have to wait for it to be updated from the official Ubuntu repositories.

Now if you have a distribution based on Ubuntu or Debian and you don't have the application on your system, the you can install with the following command.

sudo apt-get install gparted

Finally, if you could not perform the installation with this command, I will leave you the link to download the application from its source code so that it can be compiled.

How to use GParted?

The application is quite intuitive so for average users it may not represent any problem, but if you are a novice user and you have no idea what is on your hard drive, I recommend you read some articles on partitions and file systems.

Within what allows us to perform GParted on our disk is:

Create Partition.

Partition-new

Partition-new

Application it will show us on the left side a drop-down list with our disks and we can choose the desired one, on which we will create a new partition.

Below this, in the form of we can see our disk and all its partitions graphically. We can do right click and we will display the menu in this case. We select "New".

A window will open where we can see a series of options with which we will configure our new partition, assign size, file system, label, type of partition. Once this is done, we will have to click on "Apply changes" so that these are saved.

Move partition

resize partition

resize

To move a partition we just have to right click on it to display the options menu and select "Resize / Move" and apply the corresponding changes.

Delete partition

This GParted option is the most used, if you are one of those who does not stop making changes to the disk, you will find out why, this option is easy to use, we only select the partition to delete and we right click and within the menu we click on "Delete".

Copy partition

To copy a partition we right click on it, in the menu that displays we select "Copy", then we right click on the partition where we want to paste it and select "Paste".

Resize partition

This option is quite useful when you want to assign more space to a partition within the same disk, to get to this option we right click and on the "Resize / Move" menu.

It is necessary to have free space to perform any operation with this option.

With the options that GParted offers us explained a little, I can say that it is an excellent application and above all open source.
