Headset 3.1, play Youtube music from Ubuntu desktop

about headset 3.1

In the following article we are going to take a look at Headset 3.1, which is the latest version released today of this program. Currently, a large amount of music is still uploaded every day on YouTube, and all of it is usually free to listen to. Unfortunately, on Gnu / Linux there is no official YouTube Music app as in mobile phones.

Headset is a Free, cross-platform desktop app with which we can play music from YouTube natively directly from the desktop of our Ubuntu system. This application can be an excellent alternative for those who do not want to pay for the premium version of Spotify.

Application has no ads and is very easy to use. It is enough to write the name of your song, artist, favorite band or the name of the album in the search engine of the application and select one of the results obtained to start playing the music.

Headset general characteristics

  • Being multiplatform, Headset is available for Windows, Gnu / Linux and macOS. It can even be built from source in a custom environment.
  • There is a paid version, with more features available. Even though the free version has everything you need.
  • We will have the possibility to choose between dark and light theme.
  • All data, credentials and cookies are transmitted through an SS connectionL to keep us safe on the net.
  • To ensure safety and stability, a much of the Headset source is kept open.
  • Cloud sync. Even if we use different equipment, we will only have to log in to have our favorite music available again.

These are just some of the Headset features. They can consult all of them in depth from the project website.

Install Headset 3.1 on Ubuntu

This application is compatible with a wide variety of Gnu / Linux operating systems and its configuration is simple. They can get the installers or the source of the program from the releases page of the project on GitHub.

To start the Headset installation process in Ubuntu 19.10, which is the system I'm going to use in this example, all you have to do is open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). The developer has provided a .DEB package downloadable from the releases page of the project. Although for this example, to download this .DEB we are going to use the wget command as shown below:

download the .deb package

wget https://github.com/headsetapp/headset-electron/releases/download/v3.1.0/headset_3.1.0_amd64.deb

From download the latest released DEB package, which as I write this article is version 3.1, we only have to proceed to the installation of it through apt. We will use the following command:

3.1 headset installation

sudo apt install ./headset_3.1.0_amd64.deb

In conclusion, in case dependency problems appear during installation, it can be corrected by running in the same terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f
