How to have the recycle bin on the Ubuntu 18.04 desktop

Ubuntu desktop with recycle bin

Novice Ubuntu 18.04 users will be surprised to find that they do not have direct access to the recycle bin. At least if they share the operating system with other more advanced users. Also, it may be that the hard drives installed in the computer appear on the desktop and we do not want them to appear on the desktop every time we start it.

The modification of these elements as well as removing desktop icons can be done in an easy way in latest Ubuntu versions. Here we tell you how to do it in both Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 17.10, both with Gnome as the main desktop.

We need Gnome Tweaks to remove Recycle Bin from Ubuntu 18.04 desktop

Icon configuration on the desktop can be done easily thanks to the Tweaks or Retouching tool that we can install in Ubuntu. For its installation we have to open the software manager and search for "Gnome tweaks". After installing the program, we have to execute it and a window like the following one will appear:

Now we go to the left part and we go to «Desktop». A list of items will appear that may or may not be on the Ubuntu desktop. As in other applications, the way to activate or not an option is through a button or switch. If it appears in orange it will be active and if not it will be deactivated. If we want to have the recycle bin icon, we activate it and if we do not want to have it, we deactivate it.

The recommended setting is activate the option "Show icons", "Trash" and "Personal folder". Three options that will make it easier for us to work with the new Ubuntu desktop. Gnome Tweaks or also called Retouching in Spanish, is a great program and will allow us not only to customize our distribution but also do practical things like show / remove the recycle bin on our Ubuntu 18.04.

Allow me to say that something goes wrong when it is necessary to do an "how to do it" to have the trash can on the desktop.

I have seen on another page that it can be done by command lines.

    To remove the trash:

    gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop trash-icon-visible false

    To put it:

    gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop trash-icon-visible true
