How to install an Ubuntu 19.04 virtual machine on Windows 10

Ubuntu 19.04 on Hyper-V

From today, after launch from WSL 2 yesterday, Canonical has added support for installing a Ubuntu 19.04 virtual machine on Windows 10. The software to run this virtual machine is Hyper-V and, once we get used to it, it is the best option to run virtual machines under the operating system developed by Microsoft. Of course, keep in mind that before starting you have to install or activate Hyper-V, but don't worry, in this article we will give you all the details.

The process is simple, but before we start we have to make sure that our computer is compatible with the software. You must be using an Enterprise, Pro or Education version Windows 10 (not compatible with the Home version), the processor has to be 64-bit with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), a minimum of 4GB of RAM and has to have CPU support for the extension of the mode Virtual Machine Monitor (VT-c on Intel CPUs). If your computer meets these requirements, you can proceed to install Hyper-V.

Possible problems when installing Ubuntu 19.04

I would not want to start this tutorial without warning that the virtual machine is likely not working once the process is finished. The most common problem that we can find is that our equipment does not comply with the mentioned requirement of "CPU compatibility for the extension of the Virtual Machine Monitor mode (VT-c on Intel CPUs)". This should not be a problem in the equipment of medium characteristics, but it will be if in its day we buy a computer that is fair in terms of resources.

Install / Activate Hyper-V in Windows 10

Before installing Ubuntu 19.04 in Windows 10 we have to activate Hyper-V. To do this, we will follow these steps:

  1. We right click on the Windows icon in the start menu.
  2. We choose the option "Windows PowerShell (Administrator)".
  3. We paste this command:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V -All
  1. We wait for the process to finish.
  2. We restart the computer. It will take a while and it will restart twice.
  3. Once restarted we will have Hyper-V installed. We can check that it is activated by typing "Activate or deactivate Windows features" and seeing that it is marked "Hyper-V" as you can see in the following screenshot:

Once activated, we can access Hyper-V from the start menu. Initially, the option does not appear in the search. It seems that Windows has to finish indexing for it to appear. We can try to put "Hyper-V" in the search to run the program and, if it does not come out, open it from the start menu. 4. We click on «Create virtual machine».

  1. The next time we want to run Ubuntu 19.04 we will have to do it from the "Hyper-V Administrator" tool.

How Hyper-V works

Hyper-V

Hyper-V not much different from Virtualbox, so any user who has tried the famous Oracle tool will know more or less what he has in hand. It is a program that manages virtual machines and from where we can configure them later. We can make changes to the hardware, edit the disks or delete the virtual machines, which will be good for those users that do not work for them because they do not meet all the requirements. It is more comfortable than Virtualbox if what we want is to install Ubuntu, but the requirements can be a problem.

Has this Ubuntu 19.04 virtual machine worked for you on Windows 10?
