How to install KDE desktop in Ubuntu 12 04

In the next article I am going to teach you how to install the kde desktop in Ubuntu 12 04, I have to admit, that I have never been a big fan of the functionality of this desktop for Linux, which although being very spectacular and looking very worked, has never quite convinced me.

I suppose the reason will always have been the lack of time to get hold of it, but now that I have a little more time to experiment, I like a lot what I am discovering about this popular desk.

To install the KDE GUI, we will not have to add the KDE repositories or anything like that, since Ubuntu gives native support to this type of desktop, all thanks to the distribution Kubuntu that this desktop is installed by default.

So to install it, nothing is easier than opening a new terminal and typing:

  • sudo apt-get install kde-standard

KDE on Ubuntu 12 04

  • sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
kubuntu-desktop

When the installation begins, halfway through it, a session configurator will appear where we will have to press the button to accept, and later to the option KDM.

When the installation is finished, keep in mind that it will take a while, we will install the spanish language pack for KDE, surely we will already have it installed, but just in case we will make sure by typing the following line from the terminal:
  • sudo apt-get install language-pack-kde-en

Spanish language pack

Now we will close session, and in the login manager of Ubuntu 12 04 we will select the option indicated in the screenshot:

The charging of the KDE desktop:

Finally, the newly installed KDE desktop will appear:

Keep in mind that the applications you will see KDE own, they are not installed in our system, if you want to use them, you must install first.

Good article, just a small correction, where you put:
    sudo apt-get install-kubuntu-desktop

    it should actually put:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

    All the best
