How to install kernel 4.16 on Ubuntu 17.10

A few hours ago, the Linus Torvalds team released the latest version of its kernel, Linux kernel 4.16. A kernel that sooner or later will reach our teams thanks to the Ubuntu development team. However, the Ubuntu kernel team does not stop at work and we can already get this version of the kernel for the latest version of Ubuntu, that is, Ubuntu 17.10, although we can install it on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04.

Although we must warn that this new kernel can cause serious failures or make Ubuntu unstable. So it is recommended provided that if our Ubuntu is optimized and works correctly, better not touch it and wait for the Ubuntu team to provide us with the updateKernel 4.16 offers updates to the hardware drivers that we use as well as security patches that have appeared during these weeks (which are many) and supports new hardware that never hurts in case we have a new computer. This is an interesting and necessary update if we see that our hardware does not work correctly with our Ubuntu. But as we have said before, it is not recommended if our computer, our hardware and our Ubuntu work correctly.

If we still want to install kernel 4.16 in Ubuntu, we have to go to download repository y download the version corresponding to our platform and with the label of «generic» or with the label «latency», either of the two works for us, but we have to download and install both the headers and the kernel.

Once we have the kernel 4.16 deb package, we open a terminal where the kernel is and we write the following:

sudo dpkg -i NOMBRE-PAQUETE-KERNEL.deb

We have to replace the KERNEL-PACKAGE-NAME with the exact name of the kernel package, that despite starting with Linux, the numbering can change into a number and then it will not work. Once we have installed everything, We reboot the machine and Ubuntu will load with the new version of the kernel. Simple and fast Do not you think?
