How to install LibreOffice 5.4 on Ubuntu 17.04

libreoffice

A few days ago a new version of LibreOffice was released. The famous office suite has arrived at LibreOffice 5.4, a version with many new features. This version however is not yet available in our Ubuntu distribution. That is why we are going to tell you what to do to have this version on Ubuntu Zesty Zapus, that is, Ubuntu 17.04, although it is also valid for Ubuntu 16.10 and for the LTS version of Ubuntu, that is, Ubuntu 16.04.

In this case only we will need the Ubuntu terminal to do this, although the newest ones will also need the Software Update tool, but the latter is not essential. Since LibreOffice 5.4 is not in the official repositories, we have to add repositories that contain the version, so we open the terminal and write the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-5-4

With this we will add the external repository containing the latest version of LibreOffice. Attention, because this repository will incorporate the latest versions of LibreOffice, so if we don't like LibreOffice 5.4, we just have to remove it from our list of repositories.

Now we have to update the system so that Ubuntu 17.04 will automatically download and install LibreOffice 5.4. For this we only have to write the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

This will begin the installation and upgrade of LibreOffice to version 5.4. If, on the other hand, you are novice users, another option is use the Software Update tool and have it look for the latest version of LibreOffice. This process is slower and the tool may not detect the new version at the first scan, so it is more appropriate and faster to use the terminal and its commands.

The novelties of LibreOffice 5.4 are quite a lot and very varied although we have to say that the default interface does not change and the online tools are still few. In any case we leave you with a video that contains the most important news.
