Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has been released today and that will make many users start updating their Ubuntu version. It will also be an occasion for many users to change their distribution and others to even change their operating system. The update e Ubuntu 18.04 installation It is a simple and quick process to make but it will not be the version that many use, but it will be their official flavors that will be successful. Good because many prefer another desktop to Gnome or because their computers are somewhat old and do not support the demands of Gnome and Ubuntu 18.04, the official flavors will be the objective of many users for their computers. One of those official flavors will be Lubuntu, a light but functional flavor that is available to everyone and which we are going to talk about in this article to teach you how to install and configure it effectively.

Why install Lubuntu 18.04?

Surely many of you will wonder why use and install Lubuntu 18.04 and not the main version of Ubuntu or any other official flavor. The reason for this is that the latest version of Ubuntu will cause many computers to stop working correctly to slow down or simply go wrong. This is due to the hardware requirements that are higher than in previous versions. However, Lubuntu is an official flavor that contains LXDE as the main desktop and a set of programs that consume few resources. Thus, Lubuntu 18.04 is a lightweight version and conducive to those whose teams have few resources and they want to keep having Ubuntu.

Installation steps

The first thing we need to get is the Lubuntu 18.04 installation iso image. We can achieve this through the official Lubuntu website. Once we have the Lubuntu ISO image we have to save it to a pendrive. Something simple if we have the tool Etcher, but if not we can always continue The Guide that we have published for a long time.

Now that we have a bootable pendrive with the Lubuntu 18.04 installation image We have to insert it into the pendrive and restart the computer by first loading the pendrive before the hard disk, this is achieved by pressing F8 or F10 during startup.

A screen like the following will appear:

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

Now we select Spanish and click on the option "Install Lubuntu". Now a desktop will load with the Lubuntu installation wizard. The installation wizard is a very simple tool. First a screen like the following will appear:

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

In it we will select the option "Spanish". We press the following button and a screen like the following one will appear:

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

Now we have to select the keyboard language. In this case, on both screens we mark the option "Spanish" and press the "continue" button. On the next screen, something new will appear that has to do with the Ubuntu Minimal option. In this case we have two options:

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

Normal Installation or Minimal Installation. The latter is recommended for computers with few resources and only has the desktop, the web browser and the basic utilities. If we do not have problems with the hardware, it is best to mark the Normal Installation and press the "continue" button.

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

The Installation Type screen will appear. If we have a blank hard drive, we choose to install Lubuntu or Erase disk and install Lubuntu and press the continue button. If we have more operating systems or keep the Home partition, we will mark "More options" and configure the partitions to our needs. The locate screen will now appear. We are in Spain so we will mark the option of Spain -Madrid and click on continue.

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

On the next screen, it will ask us for the root name and password, as well as the name of the computer. We fill it in and press the continue button.

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

Now the screen will shrink and the operating system will begin to install.

Installation of Lubuntu 18.04

Depending on the machine we have, the process will last more or less, but it is usually an average of 25 to 40 minutes. Once we have finished the installation, we reboot the system to have Lubuntu 18.04 ready. But there is still the post-installation.

What to do after installing Lubuntu 18.04

The Ubuntu distribution as well as its official flavors are quite complete Gnu / Linux distributions, but it is never to the liking or needs of all users. It is because of that always have to do post-installation tasks. Tasks that consist of adapting our Lubuntu 18.04 to our needs. Without these tasks, Lubuntu 18.04 will work fine but with these tasks, Lubuntu 18.04 will offer us the full potential of the distribution.

The first thing we have to do is update the operating system in case there is an important or necessary update. To do this we open the terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

One of the first tasks that must be done after updating the repositories or that at least I do is the installation of compressors. A compressor is something important nowadays but I don't know why not all the formats are usually by default. So we open a terminal or LXTerminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full p7zip-rar rar unrar

This will install us 7zip and rar decompressors, formats quite widespread on the Internet.

And speaking of the Internet, the web browser of the distribution is Mozilla Firefox, but it may not be to our liking, because it has few resources or because we prefer Chrome. So if we want to change it, we just have to write the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

or if we want something light:

sudo apt-get install midori

The next step we have to carry out is the installation of an office suite. Lubuntu 18.04 comes with Abiword and Gnumeric, but it may not be enough for many users. In this case we have to install LibreOffice. To do this in the terminal we will write the following:

sudo apt-get install libreoffice libreoffice-l10n-es libreoffice-help-es

If we are heavy users of web browsing, that is, if we only browse the Internet, it will be necessary to install OpenJDK, the open source Java virtual machine. To do this we open the terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get install openjdk

And now I have less than Ubuntu 18.04 users?

With all this we will already have Lubuntu 18.04 on our computer. But surely many of you will have the feeling that you have less than Ubuntu 18.04 users. The truth is that no. Now there is the personalization and total adaptation of the distribution to our needs and tastes.

It is something that all users of Gnu / Linux distributions have to do, not just Lubuntu 18.04 users. And is that factors such as the computer, its hardware or the internet connection make Lubuntu 18.04 have to be customized more than usual but the result will be the same as if we have Ubuntu 18.04, don't you think? Well then try it.

good day, I have used lubuntu since 2013 and it fascinates me, but when installing version 18.04 I noticed 3 things that I need help, 1 the startup is much faster than the previous version, 2 as I was testing and installing it tends to occupy more Memory already when closing the windows is waiting to respond, and the last thing was that the gnome-mpv multimedia player worked only once with a single file then it did not start and does not open generating an error report. I tested on several PCs in live mode and the same problem. with media player

Hello Jose Miguel, I am not an expert but I think that what you ask is quite simple.

You must download an ISO image from the Lubuntu official website (be careful to choose either the 32 or 64 bits depending on the machine where you want to install the system). Next you have to mount the downloaded ISO on a pendrive of at least 2gb, using a Linux Live Usb type program (I suppose you are on Windows).

Then turn off the computer, insert the pendrive and turn it on again. In order for the PC to boot from the pendrive, you must configure the BIOS to boot from the USB port first. The rest is sewing and singing.

    Greetings.

Hello. I am in the process of installing Lubuntu or so I think. I have followed the process and now I am writing from the computer to which I intend to install.
I say this because I think it has been recorded on the skewer. It only starts and works if with the skewer on.
I don't know if I have the possibility to transfer it to the computer? What if I have to wait for it to load without placing the skewer? even if it takes hours to load. Or do I just have to start the whole process all over again, creating a new potable?
    Thank you .

Hello, I have an old computer where I wanted to install Lubuntu 18.04.5 Bionic Beaver LTS (LXDE), but when I try to install, the monitor (Very old monitor, culón) tells me out of range. I know that one can change the screen size options, what I don't know is how to do it to install. My old PC has a 512GB Nvidia video card and I have 2 GB of RAM, what is really old is the processor, Pentium 4 1,8 Ghz. I would appreciate if anyone has a solution, to put the screen in 1024 x 768 at 60Hz, in the installation boot, thanks.
