How to install MATE 1.8 and Cinnamon 2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04

MATE 1.8

Trusty Tahr ya tiene un mes y casi como una distribución nueva, cada pocos días tenemos una novedad más que desconocíamos o algo que ha cambiado, por ello en Ubunlog we have talked about the steps to follow after installing Ubuntu Trusty Tahr. This post list is missing the methods to install MATE 1.8 and Cinnamon 2.2, desks protected by Linux Mint but they are not so well supported by Canonical, perhaps that is why it took us a month to have a reliable method to install both desktops on our computers without having major problems.

Before getting down to business, mention that both desktops are fully functional in Ubuntu Trusty Tahr, but they have some drawbacks, in the case of Cinnamon 2.2, which I currently have installed in my laptop, it has strong Linux Mint customization, so it looks like I have Linux Mint and not Ubuntu 14.04. In the case of MATE 1.8, I am very struck that this version is not found in the official Canonical repositories, but it is found in the Utopic Unicorn repositories. I already know that Trusty Tahr is an LTS version, but I did not imagine that a version is suitable for producing a new version and not for old versions. Still, let's get down to business.

How to install MATE 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04

How we always open the terminal and write:

echo "deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/ubuntu $ (lsb_release -cs) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mate-desktop.list
wget -qO - http://mirror1.mate-desktop.org/debian/mate-archive-keyring.gpg | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon

This will start the MATE 1.8 installation process, then we reboot the machine or close the session and when we go to log in, we mark MATE as the default desktop.

How to install Cinnamon 2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04

The Cinnamon case is easier but you have to be careful, the only version that I have found that works is the night version, the nightly, it works well, but still you have to be aware that it can give a serious error at night the morning and ruin everything we have on the team. Given this warning, if you continue with the idea of installing Cinnamon 2.2, we open the terminal and write:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gwendal-lebihan-dev / cinnamon-nightly

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cinnamon

With this we will already have Cinnamon in our Ubuntu 14.04, now we only need to repeat the last step that we did in the case of MATE 1.8, that is, we reboot the machine or we close the session and at the moment of logging in, we mark Cinnamon as desktop by default.

Now you just need to investigate and test, surely you will give a lot of benefit to these desktops and the new version of Ubuntu.

The truth is that being able to use the gnome-session-flashback for now, Mate and Cinnamon seem expendable to me, but the beauty of this free software and Linux thing is, that you can do a little what you want.

Hi, I understand that nightly is a bit more unstable. Only that it remains as data.

For anyone who has the problem that you can no longer download anything from the console, follow these steps:

1- Go to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and delete the two files mate.list and mate.list.save (or something like that).

2- Delete from the sources.list file in the / etc / apt / directory anything related to mate.

This is what worked for me.

Please, what about the author of this publication who does not make an appearance, I have followed his instructions to install the MATE and what has involved me with the APT repositories.

Also, not being able to install the MATE, it has damaged the load of the APT packages so that I could not update or install anything, thanks to "fisnestor" I was able to find the solution, although the "update" still did not work well, although it seems I have solved.
