How to install Openbox in Ubuntu to lighten our system

One of the alternatives that exist in Gnu / Linux and that Ubuntu also has, is to be able to change almost all the software and adapt it to the needs of the system. This allows us to change the desktop or window manager or simply have several tools available to perform the same function, as in the case of browsers. One of the most recommended options is to change the desktop, many distros simply change their desktop and claim to be a new distro, a similar case happened with Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, and Linux Mint, distributions that began to be Ubuntu + a certain desktop and then they have gradually become independent from the mother distro. But there are occasions that we do not need to change the desktop but if we need to lighten it, then the best option is to change the window manager. Today I present you the openbox option, very lightweight window manager which can be a good option to give a user a light environment or just have us a light environment.

Usually the most famous and also the best window managers are in the Ubuntu repositories, but they cannot be accessed from the Ubuntu Software Center, for some strange reason Canonical does not allow to see programs like open box through its Centro but the installation can be done through the terminal or other managers such as Synaptic.

Openbox installation

To install open box We just have to open the terminal (as almost always) and write the following:

sudo apt-get install openbox obconf obmenu

obconf is a program created for open box that will allow us not only to configure the windows of open box but we can also install themes for the window manager or configure the launchers. Obmenu instead it is another program for open box but unlike the previous one, Obmenu it will only allow us to configure the menus.

Now if we want to use open box as a window manager we only have to close the session and a button will appear on the login screen with the Ubuntu logoIf we press it, the desktop options or window manager that we want will appear, in this case we choose the option open box and the window manager will load.

If all goes well, on the first load of open box you will have a big problem: there is no program in the menu. Well, to solve it we just have to run Obmenu and configure the menu open box with the applications we want. The use is very simple and highly configurable, suitable for all levels.

You could be a little less lining, and if the article seems poor to you, write one and share it. By the way it is not an irony.
