Although we will not yet have the famous Unity 8 in the next LTS version of Ubuntu, the truth is that through the next version we can install and run Unity 8 as if it were the default desktop and in a totally stable way. However installing Unity 8 not like typical Gnu / Linux and / or Ubuntu installations but we will have to use the installation commands of the LXC containers. This technology is new for the use of the Desktop but quite well known in cloud solutions and other platforms.
To be able to install Unity 8 we will need to have Ubuntu 16.04 installed, since in previous versions the installation is not as functional as we can see in the video.
Unity 8 Installation
Once we have version 16.04 (something that will take approximately 21 days to happen), we open a terminal and type the following:
sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc
Once we have installed it, we have to run the installer, for this we write the following:
sudo unity8-lxc-setup
After executing this command, we must pay attention to the important messages that the terminal will issue in case there is a problem with the installation. When it's done, like many other desktops, we need to restart the operating system for the setup to start working fine. Once we have restarted the system and entered the login password we can see new features and functions in Unity 8. A desktop that will have two versions or modes. A Desktop mode which still keeps the dock and Unity 7 working and a mobile mode which turns out to be closer to the mobile version where we can move the windows by clicking on the right side of the screen.
Personally I find this new version of Unity different, I also see it as something stable, something that many are waiting for but I don't know if users will use mobile mode a lot What do you think?
It's not going to me yet. I hope they solve it, I am looking forward to it.
It does not work on all computers, I think due to the lack of support for AMD video cards uu
Hi, I'm a fairly new Linux user, I've been using Ubuntu 14.04 for almost a year, and I'm going to do a new installation when 16.04 comes out. My question is if it is worth installing it for everyday use, or if it is only used to test it or for people with experience in Linux and who knows how to correct any other error that may have. I like to try new things, as long as they are good axis
installing right now
I installed it but it does not start, it is curious why I installed unity 8 with mir in ubuntu 14.04 and if it started although with problems but I could try it anyway.
I think the best thing will be to wait a little longer I'm in plasma but I want to give unity a chance
Hello everybody.
I have installed it in a virtualbox machine that I have with the daily build of Ubuntu 16.04 and it does not work either.
It's a shame because I'm curious.
Greetings.
if the truth is a shame we all want unity 8
I installed it on 16.04 and after putting the passwd it does not move from there ...
does not start install it and it stays frozen .. we have to wait
Hello, Alicia Nicole. The same thing happens to me, but I have managed to enter and, honestly, I don't quite know how. I enter Unity 8 and I get a black screen, I touch the Windows buttons, Windows + TAB, Alt + TAB, Alt + º… it ends up entering, but with the time I spend testing things, we may have to wait for come in.
Anyway, nothing can be done. It does not allow you to navigate, or open applications or anything, at least in my case. He has a lot of work to do.
A greeting.
I will try those steps that you say .. to see what happens with my laptop I will tell you
The terminal throws me this final line:
E: Unable to locate package unity8-lxc
Someone give me a hand ??? Add PPA ???
I added the ppa like this:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa: unity8-desktop-session-team / unity8-preview-lxc
I did an apt-get update & upgrade
And I installed as you say.
But choosing on the home screen does not start unity 8. It stays there indefinitely.
The same happens to me…
Why install Unity 8 if that is going to bug the operating system and make it unusable? leave the stable version and have patience for canonical to polish Unity 8 well, which if it looks interesting and attractive
