How to place windows in Unity

Unity on Ubuntu

It is increasingly requested by professional users the use of tiling on the desks. This system makes each sale that is opened on the desktop framed within it without overlapping the previous applications. This is very useful but it can also be modified and changed in Ubuntu.

Although tiling does not exist properly in Unity, there is something called "Smart positioning" which allows Unity to not overlap any windows within the desktop, but it is something that can be easily changed.

In order to make these changes first, we must have a very useful program installed that will allow us perform any configuration on Compiz, the effects and animations program that Unity has.

Unity allows us to change the placement of the windows automatically

To do this we open the Ubuntu Software Center and look for this word "Compizconfig", the same in case of using the Synaptic manager. This package installs the Compiz Config tool that provides us with a graphical way to change certain Unity options, including the placement of windows on the desktop.

Once installed, we go to the Dash and look for Compiz Config, after which the program will appear. We open it and a window like the following will appear:

ubuntu matte compiz

In this window we are going to «Place windows» and in the configuration of this option we will see several configuration options. In one of them appears the option of "Intelligent positioning" but we have more options such as cascade, centered, maximized, random, and pointer.

The positions of these options refer to the name, thus the cascade mode will present the windows in cascade option, the random mode will be without taking anything into account, etc ... Thus, although it is an unimportant detail for many, for others they can configure it to their liking without having more problems with Unity or Ubuntu.
