How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19.3: some packages have to be installed manually

Upgrade to Linux Mint 19.3

A few moments ago, Clement Lefebvre and his team have thrown Linux Mint 19.3, the new version that arrives with the code name Tricia. Initially, it does not come with too many noteworthy news but, like Ubuntu 19.10 with the latest version of GNOME, it does introduce internal improvements that will make everything work and look better. Users of the unofficial Mint flavor of Ubuntu now have two options: upgrade or install from scratch.

In this article we are going to show you how to upgrade from Tina (19.2) to Tricia (19.3). In theory, this system is valid to upload from any v19 (19.0, 19.1 or 19.2), or so they promise us from the official guide. For users of an older version, I would recommend doing a scratch installation or creating a USB with Linux Mint 19.3 and, in the type of installation, choose the option "Update". Here we explain how to do it from the specially designed option from a supported version.

Upgrade to Linux Mint 19.3 from any other v19

  1. We create backup copies. Timeshift can be used.
  2. We deactivate the screensaver.
  3. We launch the update tool and apply all pending updates.
  4. We open the update manager.
  5. In "Edit", we choose "Update to 'Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia'"
  6. We follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  7. If you ask us whether to keep or replace the configuration files, we choose to have you replace them.
  8. For the installation to be as it comes in Tricia, you have to take an optional step: install Celluloid, Gnote, Drawing and neofetch, something that we can do with the following command:
sudo apt install celluloid gnote drawing neofetch
  1. Finally, we restart the operating system.

As we mentioned in the article about the Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia release, the new version arrives with some new packages and some removed, like GIMP that leaves so that Drawing can come (I don't see that they have much to do with it, but Lefebvre mentions it that way). That is the reason why, if we want to update and have everything that Tricia brings, we have to install these new packages.

Have you already updated? How is Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia doing?

    I'm sorry to disagree.
Look for the names of the programs that they name in the article and are installed by default.
I am using Linux Mint Tricia 19.3

Just look for it in the Linux Mint menu.

They only need to be installed manually if the programs they replace have been uninstalled.

So far it works very well, I liked the celluloid player, in addition to the system start and shutdown icon, much more polished. It gives a very nice and fluid feeling. Greetings and thanks for the tips.

I apologize, I finish rereading the article and you are talking about updating the system from a Linux Mint system to Mint 19.3, without doing a clean installation and there I understand that this tutorial is relevant

In my case, I did a clean installation from scratch (my laptop) deserved it and the OS much more and the 4 packages listed appear

I apologize, when reading I understood something different. And if my tone sounded superb, even more apologies.

Anyway I was using LM Mate 19.2 and I went to LM Cinamon and I feel this last version more comfortable for me, why I don't know.

Keep up your great work, I learn something new every day in this new Operating System for me for a little over 1 year.

I just left Windows on my notebook that I have had for a long time, I installed LM cinnamon and I noticed a big difference, especially in fluidity, I will surely use it for a long time.

In the office I always use windows, I really like Windows 7, I don't like Windows 10 very much, but I have to update, all this in my work center, but I created a partition to install Linux Mint and have both operating systems.

However, I have 0.00% experience in the linux world, but I have to say, searching, reading, I did the installation, and I really liked linux mint, like everything new, you have to start discovering how it works, that is the charm, So in the office I will use windows, but on my somewhat old lap I will use linux mint, although I want to use Zorin, Deppen (I think that's how it is written) and others that are alternatives to windows.

    Greetings.
