In previous articles hLet's talk about the features that come with this new version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, as well as also a small installation guide which is aimed at newbies. Now in this new post we are going to share with you a few simple steps with which we can upgrade from a previous version of Ubuntu (that has support) to this new version.
This process is really simple and applies to any flavor of Ubuntu, but a lot of attention is required to what is going to be done because the system may experience some failures that are generally caused by not removing third-party repositories from the system or by unfulfilled dependencies.
Likewise also before starting this process I must warn that doing this type of update is not recommended, if not it is best to back up the information and perform the installation from scratch.
But because many users cannot do that for X reasons, we leave you here a simple method to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Upgrade process from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 19.10 to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Before starting any update process, you must Perform the following procedures to avoid problems during the process.
- Remove proprietary drivers (Nvidia, AMD, Intel and use open source drivers
- Disable all third-party repositories
- To avoid a large number of errors and even the installation freeze, it is better to do an apt update and apt upgrade first
You can make a backup of these with some of the tools that have already been mentioned here on the blog.
Also In case you do not skip the notice to be able to update to the new version, you must be patient Well, because many users are currently updating, it can cause some saturation or if you are already updating your system you may notice that the download of all the components is somewhat slow.
To be able to force the update notification eIt is extremely necessary that we make some adjustments to our equipment, for it dWe must go to "Software and Updates" which we will search from our applications menu.
And in the window that opened, we must go to the Updates tab, among the options shown in "Notify me of a new version of Ubuntu" here we are going to select the option:
Lastly, we must configure the system to check and warn if there is a new version. In order to achieve this, we just have to open a terminal and in it we type the following commands:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt update sudo apt dist-upgrade sudo reboot
Done this we are going to restart the system, with this we are going to guarantee that we have the most current packages in the system and avoid possible complications.
Installed the new version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
After the system reboots, we will log in again and in a few minutes you will have to skip the “new Ubuntu version” availability window.
But if not, we are going to open a terminal and type the following command in it:
sudo do-release-upgrade
Now we simply have to click on the button «Yes, update now» and then we will be asked to enter the password to authorize the update.
Now if this did not make the update notice appear. We can force this process, for this we are going to open a terminal with Ctrl + Alt + T and in it we are going to execute the following command:
sudo update-manager -d
This command will basically help you to do is to open the update tool which when opened will be forced to check if there is a version higher than the one you are using.
This process needs to download 1GB or more packages and takes up to 2 hours or more to configure. Therefore, you must wait for the process to finish.
At the end of this process, if everything was executed regularly, you should know that there are packages that become obsolete with the update, so you will be informed and you will be able to choose between "Keep" and "Delete", the latter option being the most recommended.
Last we must perform a last reboot For all the changes to be applied and come into effect, and also if you are on Ubuntu 16.04, you must first update to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and then to 20.04 LTS following these same steps.
I have loaded it, I have to install it again and upload a backup; (
What happened, why did you load your system? Blackscreen or what's up?
I installed it but I update to version 19.01 🙁
When forced to update, it says that it can update to the 20.04 trial version.
The repository must be updated.
excellent, works perfectly ... without any problem
He also updated me from 18.04 to 19.10. Now I am trying to repeat the process but it does not let me, it tells me that there is no new version of Ubuntu.
All perfect! I had to get to the last step but without problems. Thanks!
This version is much more fluid, there is a big difference with the previous ones that did not allow me to see the improvement of having changed the HDD for an SSD, now yes! Thanks. Greetings.
It worked super well for me, Thanks
It does not work for me, it only updates to 19.10 then it says that the software is up to date and the 20.04 does not appear
Hello. I have Lubuntu 18.04 and I want to upgrade to 20.04. My question is if the programs and configurations are eliminated as if they were from zero, or if everything is kept like this but with the new Lubuntu 20.04. Thanks in advance.
Settings, files and programs are maintained.
I tried to do it, but it doesn't update and it tells me that ubuntu 20.04 is not valid for 32-bit architecture, or something like that. Do I have to install the 64bit version in order to update? Can you do that from the 32bit version? How do i do it? Currently I have installed ubuntu 18.04 in 32-bit version on a laptop with 64-bit architecture.
That's right, it is not possible to upgrade from a 32-bit version to the current version since 32-bit support has already been discontinued. You will need to install the 64-bit version directly. Greetings!
Thanks for answering, do I do it directly from a bootable usb stick with the iso image of the ubuntu 20.04 and that's it? or is it more complicated?
Yes, basically what you are going to do is install Ubuntu from scratch, if you are going to do it, I recommend you make a backup of your information (it is better to be forewarned).
Thank you so much!!
I followed the steps to the letter and everything was installed perfectly !!!
Everything turned out fine for me I updated my Ubuntu 18.04.1 to 20.04 with all the steps indicated in this note although I had to force the update with the Terminal so thank you very much I really liked the new Ubuntu 20.04! 🙂
It seems that many did not read the post, the update is gradual, they can not jump from 18 to 20
100, thank you
Enlighten us because I did not read that it cannot be updated from 18.04 to 20.04.
Thank you very much for the explanation, so I have managed to successfully upgrade from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS.
Hello, I have a question, does this version have windows 10 ?, because a week ago my aunt got the new ubuntu and it also comes with windows 10.
Excellent contribution, thank you
I had to do it with the last option: sudo update-manager -d
from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to 20.04 Focal Pit
and so well that it has worked. Thank you very much for your help.
Jose
The process seems very well explained.
I'm going to start it.
Thank you
The process finished fine but now, when loading, it shows an error message, saying that I have to close the session, it returns to the home screen and starts again. Can the process be reversed?
All perfect. No problem. Thank you!
I just installed it and I'm going to see if it works
: )
I CANNOT UPDATE, BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE APPEARS TO ME:
E: The repository
"Http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu Disk Release" does not have a
Publication file.
Good morning, please, what happens if the update is interrupted, because the power went out?
Well, I updated it from scratch and I don't have anything that the version says it brings. I can't even interact with .zip files. As a new Ubuntu user I must say that it is strange and daunting.
Hello, I have the problem that the version that is installed on my server is Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS that you recommend to move to 20.04.
Thanks for your support
What if I want to uninstall version 20,04 ???
this doesn't work for me
