It is already confirmed that these improvements will arrive in Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa, even to Kubuntu that does not yet include the possibility of installing in ZFS, and it is already known that the first steps have been taken to make this a reality.
Right now, Ubuntu 19.10 allows you to install the operating system with the file system ZFS as root from Ubiquity, but using the entire hard drive. For Ubuntu 20.04, it is expected that it can also be used as in other file systems, such as EXT4, that is, using / creating partitions. In fact, the absence of this option does surprise when starting the Eoan Ermine installer.
ZFS as root will be a complete reality in Focal Fossa
On October 30 it opened a request to make changes to the system installation option with the ZFS file system. Options for installation on ZFS and existing LVM are marked as "advanced features", which will translate into the aforementioned possibility of treating the installation in ZFS like the traditional ones that we have been using in recent years.
All the zsys cards they are also in the spotlight for their arrival in Ubuntu 20.04. Among what we can do we have to install GRUB in a partition of the EFI system, dynamic resizing / boot, GRUB integration fixes, and proper unmount / shutdown. There is still work to do, but the first steps have already been taken.
Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa will be the next LTS version of Ubuntu and all its official flavors. It will be supported until 2025 and ZFS as full root, which allows, among other things, create control points, will be one of its outstanding functions.
