Previously we talked about Xbacklight, a small tool that allows us change screen brightness from console, a more than interesting option for those users who like to use the terminal, although not so striking for those who prefer graphical tools. For the latter there is Brightness Indicator, an indicator for the Ubuntu panel allowing increase and decrease screen brightness in an extremely simple way.
The indicator allows change screen brightness in three different ways:
- Setting key combinations
- Choosing the brightness level from a drop-down list
- Using our mouse wheel scrolling
The first option is especially interesting, especially since to implement it you simply have to add a couple of custom keyboard shortcuts with the values:
/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/indicator-brightness/indicator-brightness-adjust --up
Y:
/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/indicator-brightness/indicator-brightness-adjust --down
Installation
To install Brightness Indicator In Ubuntu you have to add an external repository, which contains packages for Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10 y Ubuntu 12.04. To add this repository we execute:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:indicator-brightness/ppa
Then we simply refresh the local information:
sudo apt-get update
And we install:
sudo apt-get install indicator-brightness

DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT IN UBUNTU 14.04 SOLVED
I had problems adjusting the screen brightness on my HP mini and after searching so much, I found the solution I share with you
1) The first step is to open the terminal and type:
sudo gedit / etc / default / grub
2) In the file that opens, they will look for the following line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = »remove splash»
3) We must remove what is in quotes and put the following
acpi_osi = Linux acpi_backlight = vendor
And we should have a line like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "acpi_osi = Linux acpi_backlight = vendor"
We save and close the file.
4) Now in the terminal we are going to update the grub and restart the computer.
sudo update-grub && sudo reboot
Hello! All the steps go well except the last one. In the terminal it says "/ usr / sbin / grub-mkconfig: 11: / etc / default / grub: acpi_osi = Linux acpi_backlight = vendor: not found" ... what can I do?
Hello good morning, it does not work on ubuntu 14.04. I would like to know what other application I can use to manage the brightness of my monitor.
hello just write acpi_backlight = vendor and in the terminal update the grub with; sudo update-grub and reboots
where do we write it? i have lenovo ideapad and the screen brightness is too dark and i can't find a way to use the buttons to improve it.
You are a big brother, I have an acer aspire one AO756 and it has worked for me after months looking for the solution and trying others that did not work for me, thanks
Thank you very much, I have one -acer aspire ES1-331- and it worked for me at the touch of sending the 3 codes. After executing them in the terminal I went to the system configuration and found it and I was able to lower the brightness. THANK YOU!
very good, the brignes indicator works also in lubutub 16.10 and in Acer AOI azc 602
excellent ...
Hello everyone, I have a vaio and yesterday I installed ubuntu16 through a pendrive, and when you enter ubuntu to do the installation you could not change the brightness as it changed in windows, but once I installed it in a partition of my disk I can now adjust the brightness with the keys fn + f5 to lower and fn + f6 to increase the brightness and the truth is, yesterday I came to this website to solve the problem, thanks to the administrator, but today I start ubuntu without it pendrive I could already adjust the brightness. I hope you can do what I did and if it doesn't work or if you want, download the application that my estimate mentions on this web page.
Excellent. It worked perfectly for me. Thanks!!!
