Install Deepin desktop environment in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Deepin desktop

Those users who They came to use Deepin OS, don't let me lie then this Linux distribution has one of the most beautiful desktop environments and most sought after on the net, of which one of the main reasons why users love this environment is because of its good appearance and elegance that it reflects.

For those who still do not know Deepin OS, I can tell you that this is a Linux distribution of Chinese origin, was previously Ubuntu based, but due to constant changes from constant updates, a base system change was made taking Debian as a base.

Deepin is focused on "providing an elegant, user-friendly, stable and secure operating system." Deepin development is led by Chinese company Wuhan Deepin Technology Co., Ltd

This Linux distribution became quite known for being an alternative for all those Windows XP users who had to migrate from the system when the news of the end of support for this system was announced.

About Deepin's desktop environment

Deepin has a large number of tools and applications that make this distribution stand out, all these tools work in conjunction with the Deepin desktop environment (DDE).

Among which we can highlight a Deepin File Manager (Nautilus-based file manager), Deepin Store (app store), Deepin Terminal (command console), Deepin Music (music player), Deepin Movies (video player), Deepin Cloud (network printing system), Deepin Screen Recorder (application to record the screen), Deepin screenshot (application to take screenshots), deepin voice recorder (application to record audio) among others.

Although most of these applications can be obtained through the installation of the desktop environment of Deepin, not all of them are available in Ubuntu so in order to obtain them you have to resort to other methods, such is the case of the Deepin Store, among others.

Si you want to install Deepin tools you can go to the following link, where you will be able to download the source code of several of the applications in the environment and in some cases you will be able to obtain the deb packages, although you will have to look for and install the necessary dependencies for these.

It is not a recommended option, since in many cases the deb packages are not updated and require previous versions of libraries among other things.

How to install desktop environment on Ubuntu 18.04 and derivatives?

Si you want to install this desktop environment on your system you can do it in a simple way without having to resort to compiling or resolving dependencies.

We can do this with the help of a third-party repository, this repository I must mention is not official. It is only the work of one person with whom we can install this environment in a fairly simple way.

That being said, everyone the packages installed from this method do not have an official Deepin supportTherefore, in case of a conflict in the system, the only thing you could do is contact the person who is in charge of updating the packages in the repository.

Now simply to add the repository to our system we must open a terminal with Ctrl + Alt + T and execute the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:leaeasy/dde

We update our list of repositories and packages with:

sudo apt-get update

And finally we proceed to install the Deepin environment in our system with this command:

sudo apt-get install dde dde-file-manager

During the installation process it is very likely that you will be asked if you want to keep your login manager or change it to LightDM.

The only recommendation I can give you is that if you want a more complete experience with the environment, agree to change your login manager.

Si you want an even greater aesthetic you can install the following package:

sudo apt install deepin-gtk-theme

At the end of the installation, it is not necessary to restart our computers, just have to close our user session and start it again with the new desktop environment.

Unfortunately it is not optimized, the configuration does not allow it to be closed, making the desktop uncomfortable, the application store does not appear, preventing the installation or uninstallation of applications among other less important inconveniences.
