How to install Falkon on Ubuntu 17.04, formerly known as QupZilla

QupZilla browser

Finally, the Qupzilla web browser has been renamed Falkon. This will be the new web browser of the KDE Project. This browser is already inserted in the KDE project and has versions that we can install and use in any distribution. And Ubuntu is no exception.

The KDE team, Falkon (formerly known as Qupzilla) and Neon have opted for snap packages, the new Ubuntu package and that means that we can install this web browser with two lines of code in the terminal of our Ubuntu.

Falkon installation

But, before installing Falkon, we must have KDE Frameworks in our Ubuntu, a package from the KDE project that we can install on any desktop, whether or not it is from the Project, since Falkon uses certain KDE Frameworks libraries and programs. Thus, to install it we have to open the terminal and write the following:

sudo snap install kde-frameworks-5

This will install this KDE framework, a fairly heavy application that takes up 200MB. It is important to know this because if we have a slow connection, the installation can take quite a few minutes and even hours. Once we have this package installed, in the same terminal, we write the following to install Falkon:

sudo snap install falkon --edge

This web browser package occupies 3,2 MB, so the installation will take a few minutes, even with a slow connection. The reason for this small package is because it uses libraries and parts of the KDE Frameworks.

Remember that the Falkon web browser is still a developing browser. However, it is in the development channel and over the next few days and even weeks it will be updated and corrected bugs that are found. This is important because there will still be some bugs but it can be used, since the base of this web browser is still the famous Qupzilla.
