How to install GIMP 2.9, the latest version in development, on Ubuntu

GIMP 2.9.4

Do you know GIMP? What a dumb question I just asked, right? At the moment, one of the most popular open source image editors has v2.8.18 in its most updated version, but that is only in its official or stable version. At the moment they are already being tested GIMP 2.9.x, some versions in development that will be officially released sooner rather than later and that we can already test if we wish.

But before installing a development version we have to take into account a couple things, the first being that "in development" or "beta" means we are likely to run into some glitches that are not present in the version that is available right now in Ubuntu's default repositories. The second is that, logically, to install GIMP 2.9.x we will have to do it by adding a repository, something that many Linux users do not like.

How to install GIMP 2.9.x and future development versions on Ubuntu

As we just explained, to install the GIMP development versions we will have to do it from a repository that we will have to add to our sources. The new versions will be available for Ubuntu 16.04 and later, that is, 16.10 and 17.04. We will install it by following these steps:

  1. We open a terminal and write the following command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp-edge
  1. Next, we update the packages and install GIMP with the following command:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install gimp

Simple, right? Personally I am not much about installing repositories and software that is in the testing phase because of what we have mentioned, first because of having one more source to refresh and then, or perhaps more importantly, because of using software that will present us with more problems than stable versions. , which is why they are called stable.

Have you installed GIMP 2.9.x? What do you think of these development versions of the great GIMP image editor?

When executing the command sudo add-apt-repository ppa: otto-kesselgulasch / gimp-edge throws me an error after logging in "sudo: add-apt-repository: order not found" I would like to know the solution to this.
