How to install KDE Connect on Gnome

MConnect for KDE Connect on Gnome

KDE Connect is a very useful application for Ubuntu users and for those who also use an Android smartphone. This simple application allows its owners to be very productive without having to spend minutes and hours in front of the mobile screen.

However, the problem with this application is not in its operation but in its requirements. Actually you need to have the KDE or Plasma desktop to work properly, but many users (especially Ubuntu 17.10 users) have or use Gnome and not KDE. Then what can be done?

For Gnome, there is the possibility of making KDE Connect work, without using an emulator or having to install KDE. This method of operation is based on the use of an extension for Gnome that acts as a bridge between the application and the desktop.

But, first we have to install KDE Connect on the computer. To do this we open a terminal and write the following:

sudo apt-get install kde-connect

After this we press the enter button and the installation of the program in our Ubuntu will begin. Once we have installed the application on our computer, we have to install the KDE Connect Android app. This app can be obtained through the Google Play Store.

Now we have to install the extension known as MConnect. This extension allows to display the messages and notifications of the smartphone on the top bar of the smartphone. So once we add the extension, we either log out or restart it and then an applet will load with the KDE Connect information.

Now we have to connect the smartphone with the application, for this we will use the normal method, through have the smartphone on the same network as the computer and pair it through access codes. The process is simple and after that, we will already have the KDE Connect application running in Ubuntu 17.10 and in the versions with Gnome as a desktop.
