Microsoft Office for Ubuntu

Although LibreOffice is currently a very good office suite, there are cases in which a user has to use Microsoft Office and Libreoffice, something that in the long run gives problems with certain incompatibilities. This can be fixed installing Microsoft Office for Ubuntu and without using Wine.

Recently Microsoft has released a version of Microsoft Office via the web, something that can be used in any operating system and if this operating system works well with web technologies such as Ubuntu, installation is easy. Thus, a deb package was created that installs the included Microsoft Office, OneNote and Powepoint webapps in Ubuntu. Once installed, we will only need an Outlook account or rather a hotmail account, so that we can run the usual Office in Ubuntu.

Easy installation of Microsoft Office for Ubuntu

Ubuntu allows us to install deb packages in two ways, one easily and the other a little more complicated, but not difficult at all. For the easy method, we downloaded the Office deb package for Ubuntu hereOnce downloaded, we double click on it and the installation wizard will start.

If you have the latest version of Ubuntu, the system will tell you that the package is of poor quality, but you ignore it and continue with the installation. Once finished, we go to the dash and look for any app that we want to use such as Microsoft Word, Excel or Powerpoint.

Advanced installation of Microsoft Office for Ubuntu

This method of install Office for Ubuntu It is almost the same as the previous one but based on using the terminal, so once we have downloaded the previous package, we open the terminal and write:

cd /Downloads

sudo dpkg -i microsoft_online_apps.deb

After this, the installation of the package will begin and then we will have in the dash the shortcuts of the Microsoft Office web applications.

Personal opinion

Having LibreOffice In our Ubuntu, it seems silly to also have Microsoft Office but this version of Office brings Powerpoint and OneNote, two applications difficult to find good equivalents in Gnu / Linux and even more so that connect with Android / iOS and Windows. For that reason alone, this version of the most famous office suite is possibly worth using, don't you think?

The truth is that even if we use a free office suite, the dependence of many people on Microsoft Office often makes the documents incompatible with each other or part of the format is lost. Even the absence of some fonts is already a problem that we can solve by having installed Office for Ubuntu on our PC.

If we do not work with third parties it is likely that the previous problem we do not have but still, it is never bad to have Microsoft Office installed considering that it accounts for almost all the market share worldwide and although there are many alternatives, it seems that Word, PowerPoint and company continue to reign among users.

How do you uninstall it ??, I don't want to have a simple shortcut, anyway thanks!

  3.   Joaquín García said

Yes, open the browser that is by default, in my case I used Chrome, although it works it works 😉

  4.   Joaquín García said

The uninstallation is simple, open the terminal and write dpkg -r microsoft_online_apps.deb with this will be more than enough. And thanks to you, few try software and if they don't like it they say thank you. The truth is that it is very appreciated 😉

The method to uninstall does not work.
The system tells you to uninstall the packages individually.

You are very right Yoyo, thanks for the warning, the truth is that when you write you do not remember how useful it is to copy and paste. Oh and thank you very much for following us, it's an honor even if you don't believe it 😉

So while I understand this it just installs a shortcut to open Microsoft Office Online in the browser, right?

MS Office web applications are not useful to me, as I cannot even put a French indentation with them, required by APA style for essay references. LibreOffice allows me to put them with a single click in the sidebar, something that not even Office 2013 can do.

The truth is there is nothing that MS Office cannot do. LibreOffice seems very limited in every way.

Sangria fancesa? Did you really not find how to put them?

You are the ideal LibreOffice user. Go ahead!

I think the only reason to do that is to get out of the time of the annoying customers who complain about not seeing what they are already used to, if they see their files to print and see it in another program or that the letter has been changed at the moment to open it in another program and unnecessary words, apart from unfair to try to explain what one does, they would still want to see the same thing. Maybe just for that if I would use it ... maybe ....

  11.   @EdgarGonzalo_M said

And will you need Internet to force to be able to use the packages?

  12.   Gower said

If it is of importance, the non-geek user sees Libre Office as very complex and difficult to use when we know that it is not. It is simply to open other options for other users and in terms of interface it is an effective hook and in that, Libre Office has nothing to do with MS Office.

  13.   José Antonio Followed Bent said

Well, it seems like an advance, not because I change or compare LibreOffice.
But when you request to use an Ubuntu environment in your company, the excuse of office compatibility for not granting it loses many points with this option.
It is not that it will be achieved from one day to the next, but it all adds up ...

And I try to uninstall it the way you said and it won't let me ... it tells me that I need user privileges, I enter superuser mode and it tells me that I should specify the packages by their names not mentioning the name of the file where it comes from ... What do I do?

Hi, I want to say something! Reading all the comments, what I really want is that at some point the desktop app can be used easily, since web apps are always limited. I appreciate the article anyway. On the other hand, to clarify to the fans, that I moved 99% to linux, but the remaining 1%, that it was NOT EVEN the lack of the games that I love, it was onenote and outlook. Very sadly, every single monkey in the gnu world is dedicated to creating their own distro, in a rather self-centered and narcissistic quest for fame, rather than contributing to existing distros to make them more mature. It's amazing that thunderbird can't outperform Outlook today, and there's nothing that would pose minimal competition to Onenote (which is really great). This seeks to answer anyone who says that libre office is capable of completely replacing MS office. And the blame is basically on the community itself.

  28.   luis04 said

Totally agree with Javier, it is unfortunate having to do tricks to install Office or other software on Linux, no matter how hard we start LibreOffice is not Linux. If we continue like this, linux will continue to be the operating system of system administrators or of people who limit themselves to browsing and making four basic documents. Meanwhile there, the average user, dead of disgust, touching a thousand files to be able to do what is done on a windows just by installing.
For the record, I am the first one who hurts these things, but the average user, the one who works on the PC, the one who requires quality, cannot be wasting time with configurations, reading forums, modifying text files to achieve an efficient environment in your day to day

Luis04: it seems that your problem is that you want to use MAS Office on Linux. This problem can only be solved by Microsoft, which is the owner of the program. You can direct your requests to them.
Do you think that with Libre Office you can only write basic documents?
A complete doctoral thesis can be written with all kinds of automatic resources using only 20% of Libreoffice Writer's capabilities: paragraph and page styles, automatic cross-references, automatic numbering of chapters, figures and tables, automatic generation of all kinds of indexes , bibliographic database management, etc.

LibreOffice is a real rubbish compared to Microsoft's office, no matter how much they color it to be free, the truth is super clear, it is the Achilles heel of Linux

    1.    Jose said

I think you are comparing pears to apples.
Ex: MS software is paid, LibreOffice is free. One is almost unique to Windows and the other supports various operating systems. One is an owner, the other is not. One does not meet all the standards (rather it forces to accept theirs) and another that meets them.

In addition, most people do not use even 10% of what they offer either of the 2
      possibilities.
What I do accept is that MS does not send document compatibility data, so it must be done by hand, although in the latest versions it is much improved as long as you have the necessary fonts (MS fonts, etc.).

So make no mistake and say that the software is garbage just because it doesn't suit you.

Hi there. I have been a Microsoft user for a long time, but due to the context of Pandemic and having to work at home with a somewhat old Notebook, I had to choose to install Ubuntu to have a little more responsiveness from the HW of the machine.
In general, I use free packages such as Open Office or Libre Office, but they have some limitations and the compatibility with the latest versions of MS Office is not 100% and in Excel, for example, you have to make several adjustments to the tables to see them as they really would have to stay.
Another problem with this solution (I can install it by downloading the package from another link) is the printer, it does not recognize the printer installed in Ubuntu. It just lets print to PDF and still couldn't fix it.
For now I had to install VMware with W10 to use only Office there.
    Greetings.

You don't need a whole article for this nonsense. They would have left the link to office.com and that's it.
