Install the new versions of Cinnamon and MATE on Ubuntu

Ubuntu Mate Logo

Cinnamon and MATE are, today, two great alternatives to consider in addition to Unity and the rest of Ubuntu flavors, although there is already a flavor officer with MATE from Ubuntu. Also, a few days ago we brought you the news of the launch of the new versions from both desks.

Well, if a few days ago we told you in a news item that they were already available, in this article we are going to teach you how to install Cinnamon and MATE in Ubuntu, using a method that you will surely already know, and that will greatly facilitate the process of having these two desks on our computers.

Cinnamon and MATE installation

Cinnamon Installation

In order to have Cinnamon on our computer and with him one of the forks known of GNOME 3 and that work best, we will have to resort to the method of adding a PPA to our repositories, updating the list and finally installing the package. To do this, open a terminal and run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Once the process has finished, if we close the session we can return to the home screen, where we can choose Cinnamon as a desktop to run our new session.

MATE installation

For install MATE on our computer We will have to execute a procedure like the previous one, with the exception that the PPA and the installation package will have to be changed. Again we open a terminal and execute the following commands:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras

As in the previous case, for start a MATE session we will have to go to the login screen

With MATE the most nostalgic they will recover the most classic Ubuntu, and they will once again have on their computer an operating system that looks like the one we so much miss.

With these simple steps you no longer have an excuse so as not to have both desktops installed alongside Unity. Tell us how your experience has been by leaving us a comment.

I feel more identified with Mate than with Unity. Thanks for the tutorial because I already have my Ubuntu 16.04 with Mate working beautifully.
