Snap apps can be upgraded (and downgraded if necessary). We will always be running the most recent version of any snap application that we install, without the need to update it manually.

Install Skype 8.14.0.10 on Ubuntu
Skype has provided a desktop application for Gnu / Linux for quite a few years now through its website. That package is still available for Download if we want. We will download a .deb package that we can install as usual in our Ubuntu.
But the recommended and easiest way to install Skype on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or higher is to use the Ubuntu software option.
- Open the Ubuntu software option
- Search 'Skype or Whatsapp'
- Click 'Install'. The snap package can be installed directly from the Ubuntu software option, at the moment it is Skype 8.14.0.10.
With this you will already have Skype installed on your computer. In case you prefer use terminal, you can install Skype from the command line (Ctrl + Alt + T) by running the following:
sudo snap install skype --classic
If your system doesn't come with Snapd By default, you need to install it before installing Skype. To do this, open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and type:
sudo apt install snapd
Then you can launch the previous command without problem.
Once the installation is finished to start Skype 8.14.0.10, search for it between the installed applications. Re-login may be required. We can also execute the following command in the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) to launch the program without restarting the session:
/snap/bin/skype
Use Skype from the browser
If you don't think you end up using Skype often enough to bother installing the app, you can always run Skype in your favorite web browser.
You will only have to go to the URL to login in your web browser (like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome) and log in with your Skype credentials. Then you can make use of features of this program such as making calls, sending messages, exploring your contacts and more.
