Install Spotify on Ubuntu and derivatives

Spotify on Linux

Spotify has become one of the most famous music streaming services, There's no doubt. Thanks to the large amount of advertising launched by the service in different media as well as the agreements that it has managed to establish with some companies.

As well on the other hand is the support that the player has been given to the different platforms such as mobile devices, as well as operating systems. For our beloved Ubuntu system we have the official Spotify client so it is not necessary to have to resort to a third-party client.

In this we can enjoy the service that Spotify offers us, with which if you have a free account you have the possibility of listening to your music, but in exchange for having advertising in the player.

Also from time to time you will hear announcements, you will not be able to download music and enable some extra functions.

On the other hand, there is the premium service with which these aforementioned restrictions are eliminated, in addition to the fact that you can control the player from another device, that is, a remote control in a nutshell.

For those who still do not know the service In a brief way, I can tell you that Spotify is a multiplatform program, as I mentioned before, it can be used on Windows, Linux and MAC, as well as Android and iOS.

In it you can enjoy listening to music with the only requirement of having an Internet connection, given by the type of service it is.

It has a great repertoire of artists and records that you can find available to listen to.

In addition, the application serves as a social network, where you can follow your favorite artists and you can be informed of new releases, as well as events near you.

To install it in our system we have two options.

How to install Spotify on Ubuntu and derivatives?

For the installation of Spotify on our system, we must open a terminal and execute the following commands, we must first add the repository to the system:

echo deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Then we proceed to import the keys:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 0DF731E45CE24F27EEEB1450EFDC8610341D9410

We update the repository:

sudo apt update

And finally we install with:

sudo apt-get install spotify-client

The other installation method is the most recommended, since now the Spotify developers in charge of providing Linux support are going to focus on this.

The method is through a snap package, in addition to enjoying all the benefits of using this type of package in the system.

If you use Ubuntu 14.04 you must install the support for Snap with the following command:

sudo apt install snapd

We install Spotify with:

sudo snap install spotify

Solo we must wait for the package to be downloaded and installed on the system, the time of this will depend on your Internet connection, since the program weighs a little more than 170mb.

Once the installation is done, we just have to look for the application in our menu and run the Spotify client. Once the client is open, they will be able to log into it or if they do not yet have an account from the same client, they will be able to create one.

Here you will already choose if it will be free or paid to enjoy the premium services.

You can look for some of the promotions that usually have Spotify where they give you one or two premium months at a cost of or two premium months at a super accessible cost, here in Mexico it is for less than a dollar.

Now if you do not want to perform any installation on your system you can use the service from your browser, you just have to go to the official website of Spotify and at the bottom we will see an option that says web player click there and it will be directed to the url of the Spotify web player.

How to uninstall Spotify from the system?

Finally, if you have decided to uninstall the service, for whatever reason we just have to open a terminal and execute the following command.

If you installed from Snap:

sudo snap remove spotify

If the installation was by repository:

sudo apt-get purge spotify-client
