We show you how to install Ubuntu MATE 16.04

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS

The day has come. Today the 16.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu and all its official flavors have been released. In this article we are going to talk about Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS, the latest flavor to arrive in the Ubuntu family but not the least important for that. In fact, many of us think that it is the best thing that has happened to Ubuntu since the arrival of Unity. In addition, this new version includes a theme called Mutiny that is a cross between the MATE and Unity graphics environments without losing speed. Below you have everything you need to know to install Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS on your computers.

Preliminary steps and requirements

  • Although there is usually no problem, backup is recommended of all the important data that may happen.
  • It will take a Pendrive 8G USB (persistent), 2GB (Live only) or a DVD to create the USB Bootable or the Live DVD from where we will install the system.
  • If you choose the recommended option to create a Bootable USB, in our article How to create a bootable Ubuntu USB from Mac and Windows you have several options that explain how to create it.
  • If you have not done it before, you will need to enter the BIOS and change the order of startup units. It is recommended that you first read the USB, then the CD and then the hard disk (Floppy).
  • To be safe, connect the computer by cable. In my case, my computer does not do well on Wi-Fi until I do a few "tricks."

How to install Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS

The process to install Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS is very simple and is no different than the process to install other flavors of Ubuntu. There are some points where things can get complicated, but only if one wants to have multiple partitions, as I will also explain. There is a step that has not come out for me in which it asks us if we want to connect to the Internet. This step only comes out if we have not connected yet, either by Wi-Fi or with the cable. Without further ado, I will detail the steps to follow to install this new version:

  1. Once the Bootable USB or Live USB is inserted and started from it, we will have two options. If we have chosen to try without installing, the first step will be to double click on the icon on the desktop that says "Install Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS". If we have chosen the option to install without testing, it will enter directly and we will have to move on to the second step.
  2. We choose the installation language. If you read Ubunlog, your choice is most likely Spanish.
  3. Then we click on «Continue».

Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS

  1. On the next screen I would recommend checking the first of the boxes at least. Otherwise, when you start the system it will be updated, not to mention the different adjustments that we will have to make, such as adding our language. To minimize errors, it is best to check that box.
  2. Then we click on «Continue» again.

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-2

  1. The next step is where we have to make the most important decision. What do we want to do? As you can see, we have 4 options, to which two are added if we want to encrypt our installation:

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-3

  • Upgrade X-Ubuntu to Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS. If you want the system to try to leave everything as it was but updated, this should be your option. Personally I do not recommend it, since there would be some remains of the previous installation. If you don't have hobbies like me, go ahead.
  • Remove X-Ubuntu and reinstall. This is one of my recommendations, but you have to bear in mind that we would lose everything we had saved. This option is good if, for example, we have Windows 10 on one partition, X version of Ubuntu on another and we want to start over from 0 with Ubuntu and leave the Windows instance untouched.
  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu MATE. This is similar to the previous option, but with the difference that it will delete the entire hard disk, including other systems, and install it from 0. Logically, before installing the system using this option, you must save a backup copy of all the important data.
  • The encryption options will be available if you delete either the disk or an Ubuntu installation and start from 0. To avoid an error, open a terminal and type the command swap-off.
  • More options. My favorite option. If it is not your choice, you will have to go to step 10.

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-4

  1. I have three different partitions for Linux: the root where the system is installed, the home folder where I keep my data and settings and the exchange area, a kind of RAM memory for what may happen. If you want to have it like me and you have not created them before, you can do it from this screen by clicking on «Create partition table». It will take us to a window where we can create, delete and resize disks. Once created, it will return us to the previous window, where we have to select the partitions and indicate what function we want each one to have. The exchange will have the name "swap". If this is the first time we do it and, as is my case, you have left the same size for the root partitions (/) and the home folder (/ home), it does not matter which we choose. If we had already installed the system with this option, the one next to the operating system label is the root folder. If we want to keep, for example, the / home folder, we can leave it as is. If not, we check the box to format it. The same with the root.
  2. Once we have all this configured, we click Install.
  3. It will notify us that the data will be deleted and all that. We click on «Continue».

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-5

  1. We choose our area and click on «Continue».

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-6

  1. We choose the keyboard layout and click "Continue". If you don't know which one it is, you can write it in the dialog box below so that it detects which one we use.

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-7

  1. In the next window, we have to create our user. We put our username, the name of our team, which is not important but it is what we will always see in the terminal, and password. Then we click on «Continue».

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-8

  1. We wait.

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-10

the-Installation-Ubuntu-Mate-16.04-LTS-11

  1. And finally, we click either "Restart" to start using the system or "Continue testing" to stay in the Live Session.

Good morning, a question, in your folder where you installed the operating system, what size did you use of space? - thanks and greetings.

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hello, Juanjo. I think I have passed, but I have also thought about a possible future in which I install heavier applications. Linux programs tend to be fairly light, so you don't need to leave much there. I have a 50GB partition for the system, 150 for the / home (where I have stored a lot of music and all kinds of documents), then I have another 120GB for Windows, so if you are careless you are left with nothing, and the rest of I have my 500GB as a backup. Today I have transferred the files from my / home folder to that backup partition to install everything from 0, then I have recovered the data and the configuration of Firefox (the .mozilla folder) and some other more.

The numbers should be done by yourself. If you do not plan to install video and audio editing programs to which you can add transitions, effects, etc., I think Ubuntu can work perfectly in 30GB or less. In fact, when I bought this computer I only left 32GB for everything and I don't remember having problems (that yes, I did not save the music in those 32GB).

      A greeting.

      1.    JuanJo said

First of all, thank you for answering - I had not installed it for a while ... if I already remembered that exactly, that if you are going to add programs in that sense, you should think about the future. friend a hug. I hope to keep in touch.

    Good afternoon.
I have been an Ubuntu user for several years and I have never had problems with the installations, but on a Fujitsu laptop (Amilo LI1705) I wanted to try MATE with the 16.04 distribution and "SURPRISE" the only option it gives me for graphic resolution is 640 × 480 when in other versions of Ubuntu it gave me 1280 × 800 and I can't find a way to change it. Can you tell me how to do it?

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hello Santiago. Standard Ubuntu has is more compatible with the different hardware out there. There is not much to look at, if it does not offer you more options, the only thing I can think of (in addition to looking for possible drivers for your computer) is that you look in System / Software and updates / Additional drivers. Maybe one from Fujitsu appears and installing it will fix the problem.

      A greeting.

Hello. The linux live USB creator does not recognize the image I have downloaded from Ubuntu Mate 16.04. It says that this version is not supported. To compensate, I install Ubuntu Mate 15.04.
Is there a way to correct this and what if I install Ubuntu Mate 16.04?

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hi Eduardo. That has never happened to me. I would download it again, if you did not do it from the official page, from the official page.

Hi, Pablo. Thanks for answering so quickly. It's funny, but in the end if I installed version 16.04 even though it announced that it was not. In the 3 options that there are when you load the version: file, cd or version list, in the third it does not appear and in the first it was where it told me that it was not compatible. I dont know what has happened. When I started it told me that I have Ubuntu 16.04 ... Anyway, solved, thanks.

However I did not know how to install it and much less where or how to start, Thanks to your article very well explained step by step and to you that I was able to install the ubuntu mate, really thank you very much for your contribution 😀!

I will continue discovering and experimenting with ubuntu mate. I know there is still a lot to learn with linux.

I keep testing but it is clear that this is what I need.
Thank you for the comments you have made, I have taken the readings calmly and I think I have made a very nice installation.
    / (ext4) about 50GB, / home
in a partition, swap 5gb (I have such a 4Gbyte). Leave another disk with ntf and ext4 for backups

And in truth this way has allowed me to consider a real scheme to carry out tests.

Hello, a few weeks ago I installed ubuntu mate 16.04 from scratch (formatting only / and keeping another / home partition to safeguard the application configurations). I ran into a problem that I couldn't save. The application "atril-thumbnailer", I scratched when using firefox in a multimedia environment, for example watching videos on YouTube or with VLC. It started to generate thousands of files without stopping at the / temp / atril-thumbailer0001 folder and so on until the physical space was exhausted.
I could not disable that application, because in itself it is not one that I could uninstall. If I erased the awful lot of space used by the lectern, more folders with their respective content would be generated again, until I closed firefox or VLC. Finally I have had to go back to the LTS 14.04.03/XNUMX/XNUMX, I'll wait to see if they release an update to stabilize this.

Hello everyone! I wanted to put Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS on a DELL INSPIRON 1520 with these specs:
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0 GHz / 4MB L2 Cache)
    OS: Microsoft Vista Home Premium
    Hard Drive: 160GB SATA @ 5400RPM
    Screen: 15.4 ″ WSXGA Widescreen (1680 x 1050)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
    RAM: 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 MHz (2 x 1GB)
Optical Drive: 8x CD / DVD burner (DVD +/- RW) w / Double Layer Support

I have a doubt if it would be a good OS for this laptop (I wanted to change it because it has outdated WVista), I am very new to this and have read a lot of articles in the last months and seen tutorials on YouTube about the subject, but I ask for your help ... I would use it for the basics (consult internet with mozilla, transmission, telegram, libreoffice and multimedia player). I also have doubts about the "snap" that I have been reading and some think that it is not safe ... any opinion and guidance would help me a lot, thank you guys very much !!!

    Hola!
I'm new to this Linux thing, and the truth is that I installed Ubuntu 14 on a disused 2010 netbook and it resurrected it. It was great for me because it more than met what I needed. And nothing, thank you for the guide because a few days ago I saw that Ubuntu Mate was there and I didn't have much idea of how to test it and such. It's simple, but thanks to your advice to create the bootable USB everything has been much more comfortable. Thank you very much for the guide.
On the Mate, I think the netbook is a little better for me. Of course it is a somewhat subjective feeling, but hey, so far everything is perfect.

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hi Juan Pablo. Basically, Ubuntu MATE is the same as Ubuntu was until the arrival of Unity. This makes it much lighter and it is easier to do many things, but I also tell you that you may run into some problem than another. I myself am or was a user of Ubuntu MATE until it did not allow me to do something or it cost me more than in Ubuntu.

The best thing is that you try it and see if it gives you a problem. If you don't miss anything, the fluency is worth it.

      A greeting.

Hello, I have downloaded from the ubuntu website the "flavor" mate 🙂 and when I am going to install it, both for tests (without installation) and for "normal" installation, it asks me for username and password: S
I have tried everything I can think of, but there is no way.
From what I have read in the comments, no one has ever had that, or is it that everyone knows the username and password, except me 😀
    Do you know something?

I've been using linux for ten years, and you just have to read the comments to see how much fun it is to be on google all day to do anything other than write a letter
From time to time I return to it, now it occurred to me to see if I could install Ubuntu 16.04 with uefi, which seems like it can, but it is a kiloooomboooo.
Yes, in Linux there is nothing easy, well, yes, writing letters
Sound? there is only good software, Audacity, but that works on windows too
It bothers me a lot to use windows and be a slave, but there is no alternative, and if you don't believe me just look at the forums, they are full of user problems, almost all different,
The programs are free, yes, thank you, but almost none are of any use

Gimp? next to Photoshop does not even have to start, and everything is a delivery

Video? there are quite a few, but none of them are useful, and don't compare it to Sony Vegas, well, maybe in about ten years you can learn to use Cinelerra, and besides this the dependencies, in a word, you always go lame

And I am not against anyone who wants to use Linux, there are people who can dedicate hours and hours to solve the problems that arise, WHAT IF I AM AGAINST THE LIES, of those who tell us the wonders of a system that, you will see, to write letters, for the office, it is fantastic. But for nothing else
And if you don't believe me, try and see
    Ala, congratulations
