Installing Internet Explorer 9, 8, 7 and 6 on Linux

Linux Internet Explorer

The web developers and designers they have to test their code in every possible browser, and that includes - sadly - the different versions of Internet Explorer.

An easy way to install the latest versions of the Redmond company browser on Linux is using the script written by Greg Thornton. It should be noted that it is an installation in VirtualBox, so we will need to have the virtualization software installed and configured before using the script. Of course, thanks to the script we can install the different versions of the browser without having to buy a license of the operating system in which they are executed since they are trial versions, not to mention that it makes this an extremely simple task.

Note: A disadvantage that might make many think twice about using the script is that the installation size (of the 4 versions of the browser) is approximately not negligible 50GB.

Installation

Before executing the script, we must make sure that we have cURL and unRAR installed, as well as VirtualBox. If they are already on our machine then simply enter the command in a console:

curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | bash

If we do not want to install all versions of IE we can specify which versions are the ones that do. To install, for example, versions 8 and 9 we have to use:

curl -s https://raw.github.com/xdissent/ievms/master/ievms.sh | IEVMS_VERSIONS="8 9" bash

Once the script finishes its work - which can take several hours depending on our connection speed - we will have to install the VirtualBox Guest Additions for the virtual machines to work correctly. When we have everything configured correctly, it will be enough to choose the virtual machine (IE version) that we want to run and start it.

Every 30 days we will have to revert the virtual machine to its initial state, which is extremely simple thanks to the snapshot that is created automatically after installation.

Personally, it does not attract my attention since in W $ it gave a lot of problems so; Why bring me headaches again hehehe 🙂 I also have an XP installed in VB for some programs that I still cannot find replacement in Linux and IE8 is installed there by default and the other thing is to waste 50 GB without any useful use.

It is better to put a comment on your website like «This page looks better with an Open Source browser, please, if you are viewing this page with IE download another. Thanks"

Less and less people use Explorer, but just as there are pages that only work with IE, if it is good to try that our pages can be seen in any browser. Later it will come that they are convinced to use an Open Source explorer.

Excellent contribution, at least you got me out of a big trouble with this solution (I lost my Win isos that I had in a backup of 500 gbs ¬ ¬).

Something that would be convenient to note is that to access the different versions of Windows you need to enter the following password:

    Password1

    Greetings and thanks for sharing;).

Dear, thanks for the tutorial. A small detail is that the required package is unar and not unRAR. Greetings and thanks again.

half of the explanation is missing, for those of us who are new and do not suppose to have installed components that they name here as known and known by all
