KDE Applications 20.08.0 now available, with new functions for the project's set of apps

KDE Applications 20.08.0

The project known, above all, for being responsible for one of the best graphical environments for Linux (Plasma) has just released the August 2020 update of its set of applications, or what is the same, KDE Applications 20.08.0. It is a "zero-point", which means that it does not come to correct errors. In any case, it will do the opposite, but no, it is not that it has been launched to introduce errors, but new functions that will surely arrive with bugs that will have to be solved in September, October and November of this year.

As almost always, KDE has published a couple of articles about the release. The most striking is where they are presented, which is also where they tell us about the most outstanding news, which you can access from here. Below you have a summary of the most outstanding news that have arrived with KDE Applications 20.08.0, although, of course, not all are. Yes, we advance, from what we read on weekends, that the project continues working to improve Elisa.

Highlights of KDE Applications 20.08.0

  • Dolphin:
    • Now displays thumbnails of 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) files.
    • No longer shows the too long name of a file cut with start and end parts. Now it shows the entire beginning and extension.
    • Now remember and restore the position we were seeing, as well as the open tabs and split views. The function is enabled by default, but can be disabled from the settings.
    • Now displays remote drives and FUSE with a friendlier image instead of the full path.
    • Ability to mount ISO images from a new context menu.
    • New features can now be installed from the "Get New" window, without any manual steps in between.
    • New option to copy location.
  • Console:
    • It also allows us to copy the location.
    • Now highlight the routes.
    • As for the split screen, the thickness of the dividers has been increased.
    • The Ctrl + Shift + L shortcut that takes off the current tab has been removed.
  • Improvements in Yakuake, like its operation in Wayland.
  • digikam has improved facial recognition, among other improvements
  • Kate:
    • The Open Recent Article menu now displays documents opened in the editor from the command line and other sources.
    • The tab bar now has a more consistent image with other bars in KDE applications.
  • Elisa:
    • Now it shows genres, artists and albums in the sidebar, below other articles.
    • Playlists show the progress of the song currently playing.
    • The top bar is now responsive, which will make it look good vertically and even on mobile devices.
  • kstars:
    • Some calibration and centering has been added.
    • An option has been added to display the mounted positions that have been recorded during any calibration.
  • KRDC now shows the VNC server's own cursor instead of a small dot with the remote cursor appearing behind it.
  • Okular You have put the print functions back in the "File" menu.
  • Gwenview saves the size of the last cut box used, which means that we can cut multiple images to the same size in quick succession.
  • Skanlite:
    • Save has been moved to a thread so as not to freeze the interface when saving.
    • A D-Bus interface has been implemented for keyboard shortcuts and to control scanning.
  • Show:
    • The time back function and the shortcuts Shift + ImprPant (to take a full screen capture) and META + Shift + ImprPant (select a rectangle) now work in Wayland.
    • It no longer includes the cursor in screenshots by default.
  • okteta:
    • struct2osd uses castxml now, leaving behind gccxml.
    • Use of less obsolete Qt code, avoiding logged runtime warnings.

KDE Applications 20.08.0 It is now available, but, as always, only in code form. In the next few hours the updates will appear in Discover, as long as we use the KDE Backports repository or operating systems like KDE neon. Other distributions, especially those that use the Rolling Release development model, will also offer the new versions in the coming days.
