KDE begins to focus on the development of Plasma 6. News

KDE Plasma 6.0 is coming

The news article that has happened during the last week in KDE It has been titled as «Plasma 6 begins to take shape». With a start like this, one would have expected them to start telling us about everything to come in the next big desktop release, but the truth is that we will have to settle for the promise of Nate Graham and little else. Today's note isn't very long, but quite a few 15-minute bugs have been fixed.

KDE is currently working on two sides, one leading to the release of plasma 5.27 and the other that looks to the future, at the end of 2023, when the jump to Plasma 6 will be made. There will be a few "blank" months, and for this reason they have put so much meat on the Plasma 5.27 grill, so that we are satisfied while we wait.

New Features Coming to KDE

  • The Default Applications page in System Preferences now allows you to choose the preferred application for a much greater variety of file types. (Méven car, Plasma 6.0):

KDE System Preferences

  • In Kirigami-based applications, standard list items with elided text now show a tooltip on hover with full text (Ivan Tkachenko, Frameworks 5.103. Link).

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Elisa now increments a song's play count when it finishes playing, not when it starts (Frisco Smit, Elisa 23.04).
  • The UI for choosing the accent color has been condensed to take up less space, which will allow for other settings to be added in the future, such as the day/night color scheme change, which is in progress (Tanbir Jishan, Plasma 6.0 ):

  • The OSD menu that appears when we switch audio devices now also shows the battery level of the new audio device we've switched to (if that device has battery and reports its status, of course) (Kai Uwe Broulik, Plasma 6.0) :

Bluetooth OSD

  • Framed views with rounded corners in QtQuick-based software no longer have small korners-style glitches in the corners (Ivan Tkachenko, Frameworks 5.103).

Correction of minor bugs

  • Using a keyboard shortcut to close a window by dragging it no longer causes a non-interactive ghostly shadow of itself to remain (Marco Martin, Plasma 5.27).
  • Updates to Flatpak runtimes with a new version available are marked as such again in Discover, rather than appearing as an "update" to the existing version (although this is also possible) (Aleix Pol Gonzalez, Plasma 5.27 ).
  • Displaying the System Preferences App Style page no longer sometimes causes increased CPU usage when certain third-party app styles (Fushan Wen, Plasma 6.0) are installed.
  • Fixed two issues with the placement of Plasma panel widget popups that could result in popups not being centered correctly on their panels when using a multi-monitor setup or when the panel was not maximized to take up all the space available at the edge of the screen (Niccolò Venerandi, Frameworks 5.103).
  • Spectacle's "Copy to clipboard right after screenshot" feature works again in the Plasma Wayland session (David Redondo, Frameworks 5.103).
  • In QtQuick-based software, it is no longer possible to drag things into scrollable views that shouldn't be draggable, such as items in sidebars and lists (Marco Martin, Frameworks 5.103).
  • Fixed a bunch of small issues with scrollbars in QtQuick-based software (Ivan Tkachenko, Frameworks 5.103).

When will this all come to KDE?

plasma 5.27 It's coming on February 14, while Frameworks is out today, and there's no news on Frameworks 6.0. KDE Gear 23.04 already has a proposed date, April 20

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
