KDE begins to tell us about its apps 20.04 and Frameworks 5.65

KDE Applications 20.04

It's Sunday again, which, among others, means that KDE It has brought us back to some of the things they are working on. As on any other occasion, we have been told a few new functions, some improvements that are already available since last Tuesday, as part of the Plasma 5.17.3 release, and many corrections that will reach Plasma, KDE Applications and the Frameworks of draft.

Among the novelties that have mentioned this week we have some improvements that will arrive next month from the hand of KDE Applications 19.12, but also other of the apps of the project that will see the light in 2020 April. Other of these novelties will arrive at the beginning of next year, as we will detail later. Below you have the list of news that they mentioned a few hours ago.

News that came with Plasma 5.17.3

  • Fixed a bug that could cause the lock screen to get stuck while playing media that included a square face (Plasma 5.17.3).
  • Rotated displays now remember their positions relative to other displays after system reboot (Plasma 5.17.3).
  • Scroll bar controls are back to correct colors in GTK and Firefox applications (Plasma 5.17.3).

News and changes coming to the KDE world

This week, they mentioned 4 new features:

  • GTK and GNOME applications now inherit font, icon, cursor, and toolbar settings for KDE applications instead of having you configure them separately elsewhere (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • Checkboxes and option buttons in GTK3 applications again follow the colors in the color scheme (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • Al scrolling in Okular with mouse, touch screen or keyboard keys, scroll transitions are now animated and have inertia (Okular 1.10.0).
  • Kickoff App Launcher now has greatly improved touch support including touch scrolling, drag and drop, and press and hold to display item context menus (Plasma 5.18.0).

Bug fixes and performance and interface improvements

  • Dolphin git integration is now more reliable when showing available status and actions for large repositories (Dolphin 19.12.0).
  • When using the Details view in Dolphin, the "Date taken" column is no longer empty for JPEG files containing valid EXIF ​​date / time data (Dolphin 19.12.0).
  • Fixed a common crash in System Preferences that could be triggered when visiting the same category twice (Frameworks 5.65).
  • Disk images that have been mounted and unmounted now disappear from the Device Notifier applet as expected (Frameworks 5.65).
  • File deletion is now multithreaded, so for example deleting a large file no longer freezes Dolphin (Frameworks 5.65).
  • When the cursor is over a file in Dolphin, the information about that file displayed in the status bar no longer disappears after one second (Dolphin 19.12.0).
  • File metadata is now available while the Baloo file indexer performs its initial indexing (20.04.0).
  • KMenuEdit's search field is now focused by default, as are other applications with always-on search fields (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • Color picker icons now use familiar eyedropper-style images (Frameworks 5.65).
  • There are new icons for Search and the Baloo file indexer (Frameworks 5.65).
  • Spectacle now offers OBS Studio as another option for screen recording (Frameworks 5.65).

When will these news arrive on your KDE desktop?

What's new in Plasma 5.17.3 is available since last tuesdayWhile Plasma 5.18 will arrive on February 11. KDE Applications 19.12 will be officially released on December 12, but the only thing we know about 20.04 at the moment is that they will arrive in mid-April. They are unlikely to be available in Kubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa. On the other hand, KDE Frameworks 5.65 will be available from December 14th.

Do not forget that in order to install all these new features as soon as they are available we have to add the Backports repository from KDE or use an operating system with special repositories like KDE neon.
