KDE does not rest on Christmas and keeps telling us about the news it works on

Elisa 19.12.1 from KDE

This week, Nate Graham from KDE Community, it has taken a little longer to publish your article about the news you are working on. Taking into account the dates in which we are, it is not strange and we had even thought that they would take a break, but it has not been like that. Article It is now available and he tells us about more news coming to Plasma 5.18, KDE Applications and Frameworks in the medium term future.

Like every 7 days, Graham tells us about many new features that will be introduced in the KDE software, among which there are usually several new functions. Today he has told us about three, but none of them important enough to hang the outstanding tag. The rest of the changes are enhancements that will make working with KDE software more enjoyable and productive.

New KDE Plasma and Frameworks Features

  • The Plasma Style page of System Preferences now has a search field and filter combo box that can be used to narrow down the main view, as does the Colors page (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • The Notifications page in System Preferences now has an entry for "Other Applications" so that you can choose the notification behavior of poorly integrated applications that are not correctly identified (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • The folder properties dialog now offers an option to browse the folder in Filelight if it is installed (Frameworks 5.66). The following image is a video external to this website. If the controls do not appear, we can show them (in Firefox) from the options that appear with the right click.

Bug fixes and performance and interface improvements

  • Elisa's configuration window is no longer implemented as a KCM (a System Preferences page), so it no longer appears inappropriately in global searches (Elisa 19.12.1).
  • Dolphin SVN Integration Plugin now realizes and allows you to commit newly added files (Dolphin 20.04.0).
  • Cursor themes installed with Discover can now be removed from the Cursors page of System Preferences (Plasma 5.18.0).
  • In Wayland the widget explorer can now be used (Frameworks 5.66)
  • Gwenview now includes a toolbar button in full screen mode so you can easily show or hide the sidebar (Gwenview 20.04.0).
  • The Spectacle settings window now has a "Default" button that allows you to reset everything to the default settings (Spectacle 20.04.0).
  • Elisa's playlist panel can now be shown and hidden from a button on the main toolbar, and it is automatically hidden when the window becomes too narrow. This makes the application quite responsive. The following image is another video (Elisa 20.04.0).
  • Explanatory tags added for single click / double click settings that help to learn how to select items (Plasma 5.18.0).

When will all this come to the KDE world?

Like every week, Nate Graham has published at the end of each change when it will be available, or more specifically with what version of the software:

plasma 5.18.0, graphical environment that Graham says which will be "incredible", will arrive on February 11. Before that, KDE Community will release another maintenance update, a Plasma 5.17.5 that will arrive on January 7th. KDE Applications 19.12.1 It will arrive on January 9, but the exact day on which they will launch the 20.04 remains unknown. It is known that they will arrive in mid-April just before Kubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa. They will not arrive in time to be included by default. Keep in mind that 19.12.1/XNUMX/XNUMX is unlikely to hit Discover until at least a month later (February), even if we're using the KDE Backports repository. KDE neon will have them available sooner. KDE Framework 5.66 It's coming January 11, but we'll probably have to wait a few days for it to show up as an update on Discover.

It is important to remember that in order to install all these new features as soon as they are available we have to add the Backports repository from KDE or use an operating system with special repositories like KDE neon.
