KDE's Dolphin Will Be Able To Upgrade From One Fedora Version To Another, And Plasma 5.24 Bug Fixes This Week

KDE and Wayland

Although a little later than usual, Nate Graham did not forget his weekly appointment about news that is about to come to the project to which he belongs, KDE. Taking into account that the article is somewhat shorter, the time it arrived and that there is no introduction, we may think that something has happened, but the important thing is, first, that it has appeared and that makes us think that it is fine, and , second, that he has published an article with things to come.

Among them there is one that has caught my attention a bit, and that is that it ensures that native Wayland windows can be recorded from Xwayland applications. For example, Discord will be able to do it, but my favorite screen recorder, SimpleScreenRecorder, hasn't been mentioned, probably because it's a pure X11 app. In any case, if it doesn't improve this in the future, OBS Studio (program I'm going to reinstall because I recently formatted and want to get used to it) works pretty well on my computer. you have the News list this week below.

New Features Coming to KDE

  • The change that will allow native Wayland windows to be recorded in Xwayland apps will be possible thanks to the new XwaylandVideoBridge utility, which is basically a bridge that will make communications possible. They do not give an arrival date, but it is being developed by Aleix Pol González and David Edmudson.
  • Dolphin now has an option to change the info and preview shown in the info panel when hovering over files, and will instead only do so when files are deliberately selected (Oliver Beard, Dolphin 20.08).

  • Discover can now upgrade from one major version of Fedora to another (Alessandro Astone, Plasma 6.0)

Improvements in the user's interface

  • When using multiple monitors that have the same name and serial number, they are now visually distinguishable from each other in multiple places by displaying their connector names (David Redondo, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • Using Kicker's "Sort apps alphabetically" setting now removes manually placed separator lines between apps, instead of placing them meaninglessly (Joshua Goins, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • The text “–Portal” is no longer confusingly added to the window titles of the open/save and authentication dialogs in applications that use the portal (Nicolas Fella, Plasma 6.0).
  • The Breeze icon theme now includes beautiful new icons for the Night Color feature (Philip Murray, Frameworks 5.105):

Correction of minor bugs

  • The previous fix for Aurorae window decorations getting corrupted visually didn't handle all circumstances, so they've introduced a new one that does, which should completely fix the issue for everyone (David Edmundson, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • System Preferences no longer crashes when discarding settings changed on the Quick Settings page (David Redondo, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • The red and blue cursor colors are no longer swapped when screencasting in some applications (Aleix Pol Gonzalez, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • There is no longer an opportunity to set a screen resolution which, due to the peculiarities of the active graphics drivers, will cause graphics glitches or crashes (Xaver Hugl, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • Non-floating panels no longer have an excessively high minimum thickness when using Plasma themes that have rounded corners with a very large radius (Niccolò Venerandi, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • Changing Plymouth boot themes now works correctly for distributions that use mkinitcpio instead of update-initramfs (Antonio Rojas, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • Fixed a way that the SDDM login screen could freeze for a while when using the Breeze SDDM theme (Ivan Tkachenko, Plasma 5.27.4).
  • The Baloo file indexing service no longer adds index data for non-printable characters in the database, which could cause applications to crash (Igor Poboiko, Frameworks 5.105).

This list is a summary of the fixed bugs. The complete lists of bugs are on the pages of 15 minute bugvery high priority bugs and overall list. This week a total of 84 bugs have been fixed.

When will this all come to KDE?

plasma 5.27.4 will arrive on April 4, KDE Frameworks 105 should arrive on April 9, and there is no news official on Frameworks 6.0. KDE Gear 23.04 will be available from April 20, 23.08 will arrive in August, and Plasma 6 will arrive in the second half of 2023.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
