KDE is fully focused on Plasma 6 development, with permission from fixes for the current 5.27

KDE Plasma 6.0 is coming

This week, KDE launched plasma 5.27, which will be the last version based on Qt5. From now on they will focus on a Plasma 6 that will be based on Qt6 and in which big changes are expected, but what we have in hand now is Plasma 5.27 that has also introduced important improvements, such as the possibility of stacking windows similar to that of Windows 11, and they are going to correct all the bugs they can so that we are satisfied while we wait for the jump to Plasma 6.

At Lóleo Eventos, News list that Nate Graham has published this week, there are many that already carry the Plasma 6.0 tagline, but in the corrections section Plasma 5.27 has more prominence. That's just to be expected, and here's the biggest thing to happen in KDE in the last seven days.

New Features Coming to KDE

  • Dolphin now allows you to configure how permissions are displayed in the details view (Serg Podtinnyi, Dolphin 23.04):

  • While viewing the page for an installed Flatpak app in Discover, we can now jump directly to the System Preferences page to set its permissions (Ivan Tkachenko, Plasma 6.0):

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Dolphin's code for counting directory sizes has been made faster, improving performance especially with manually mounted network shares that for some reason are not detected as such (Méven Car, Dolphin 23.04).
  • Gwenview now zooms smoothly instead of in steps when using Ctrl+scroll using a touchpad (Frisco Smit, Gwenview 23.04).
  • Holiday calendars no longer include astronomical events, so if we also have the astronomical events calendar plugin active, we will no longer see the same astronomical events twice on the same day (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • When searching for apps in the Portal-based app switcher dialog, all apps are now automatically searched instead of just the limited set of "recommended" apps shown by default (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • When applications using the Portals-based system ask us to allow screen sharing, we can now give them a specific region of the screen, not just the entire screen or a single window (Dominique Hummel, Plasma 6.0).
  • Task Manager's "Close" context menu now says "Close All" for clarity if a grouped task is right-clicked (Fushan Wen, Plasma 6.0).
  • The Weather Report widget tooltip now shows the default wind speed and humidity (Guilherme Marçal Silva, Plasma 6.0):

  • All System Preferences pages that lacked support for "filing a bug on this specific page" should now have it (Alexander Lohnau and Nate Graham, Frameworks 5.104 and upcoming versions of a couple of other things on different release schedules).

Correction of minor bugs

  • The Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) weather provider now works again after they changed their data format (Emily Ehlert, Plasma 5.24.8).
  • Fixed a case where KWin could crash after waking up from sleep while using multiple displays with tiled windows on a screen waking up very slowly after waking up from sleep (Dominique Hummel, Plasma 5.27.1. XNUMX).
  • Fixed a recent regression in version 5.27 that, under certain circumstances, could cause desktop icons to disappear after waking the system from sleep mode until Plasma was manually restarted (Marco Martin, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • Fixed a recent regression in version 5.27 that caused Electron apps using XWayland (such as VSCode, Discord, and Element) to appear too small when using scaling (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • The new Flatpak permissions page in System Preferences will not create app-specific overrides correctly when using the system in a language other than English (Harald Sitter, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • Fixed a bug where Plasma could crash on waking from sleep if the set of connected displays changed while on sleep (Marco Martin, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • Fixed problem with displaying information about NVIDIA GPUs in System Monitor (David Redondo, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • Fixed a recent regression in version 5.27 that caused the digital clock tooltip to redundantly display the current time and time zone even when no additional time zones were configured (Nate Graham, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • The Networks widget will no longer unnecessarily display the loopback interface when using NetworkManager 1.42 (David Redondo, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • Setting charge limits for batteries that support charge limits but not charge minimums now works (Fabian Vogt, Plasma 5.27.1).
  • In the Plasma Wayland session, KDE application windows again correctly remember their size when using more than one screen (Nate Graham, Frameworks 5.104).
  • Delete downloaded content using the Get New system it is now significantly more robust (Fushan Wen, Frameworks 5.104).

This list is a summary of the fixed bugs. The complete lists of bugs are on the pages of 15 minute bugvery high priority bugs and overall list. This week a total of 106 bugs have been fixed.

When will this all come to KDE?

plasma 5.27.1 It will arrive on February 21, and KDE Frameworks 104 should land on March 4, and there is no news on Frameworks 6.0. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will arrive on March 2, and 23.04 is planned for an April 20 release.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
