KDE migrates to GitLab to provide additional options for a more accessible infrastructure

GitLab

KDE is undoubtedly a great project to build a complete graphical environment, easy to use and completely free. It is based on a free graphics toolkit called QT. In fact, KDE is a free software project historically focused on a desktop environment for UNIX systems.

KDE has a free and open source software community dedicated to creating an easy computing experience to use. It offers an advanced graphical desktop, a wide variety of applications for communication, work, education and entertainment, as well as a platform to easily create new applications.

KDE is one of the largest free software communities with over 2600 contributors. Almost a year ago, KDE envisioned a migration to GitLab: the KDE board members, the KDE Sysadmin system team, and the KDE Onboarding Initiative followed the GNOME migration as a model.

As a first step, GitLab planned to help them with a proof of concept to make their evaluation easier. and a decision to make after consulting with the KDE community. The main objectives of a successful migration would be:

  • more accessible infrastructure for taxpayers
  • code review integration with git
  • streamlined infrastructure and tools
  • good relationship and open communication channel upstream (in GitLab in this case).

The two parties finally reached an agreement and It was during the month of September that GitLab announced that KDE decided to adopt it in these terms:

“Today, GitLab, the DevOps platform delivered in a single application, announced that KDE, an international technology community that creates free and open source software for desktops and laptops, is embracing GitLab for its developers to further improve the accessibility of infrastructure and encourage contributions.

“KDE is a free and open source software community dedicated to creating an easy-to-use computing experience.

It offers an advanced graphical desktop, a wide variety of applications for communication, work, education and entertainment, as well as a platform to easily create new applications.

Add access to GitLab will provide the KDE community with additional options for contributors infrastructure, git code review integration, streamlined infrastructure and tools, and an open communication channel to the GitLab community.

“With the adoption of GitLab, the KDE community, one of the largest free software communities with more than 2.600 contributors, will have access to an even broader range of code review and development features with the DevOps platform. GitLab, in addition to the tools currently used by the KDE community.

“The KDE community will also be able to integrate the single GitLab application for the DevOps lifecycle into their development workflow, from planning, development and deployment to monitoring. By using GitLab, KDE contributors will have access to concurrent DevOps and will be able to manage and secure multiple steps. GitLab also offers greater visibility, comprehensive governance, and accelerates software lifecycles.

Commenting on the decision, David Planella, Community Relations Manager for GitLab, said:

"We are delighted that the KDE community has chosen GitLab to provide its developers with additional tools and features for building advanced applications."

He added that “KDE places a lot of emphasis on finding innovative solutions to old and new problems in an atmosphere of open experimentation. This reflection is in line with GitLab's goal of helping teams better collaborate on software development. So we look forward to supporting KDE as they continue to create great software for millions of users around the world. "

For her part, Lydia Pintscher, President of KDE eV, said: «For an open community like KDE, a user-friendly and user-friendly infrastructure is essential. We have spent the last two years significantly lowering the barriers to entry to KDE. Moving to GitLab is an important step in this process. "
