KDE neon finally makes the leap from Bionic Beaver and becomes based on Ubuntu 20.04

KDE neon 20.04 update

A little over a year ago we explain some differences and similarities between KDE neon and Kubuntu. Among them there are two that stand out from the rest: KDE neon is based on LTS versions of Ubuntu, while Kubuntu releases a new version every six months. On the other hand, Kde neon special repositories that allow you to install new versions of Plasma, Qt, Frameworks and KDE applications sooner. For the first reason, the neon version was still based on the Bionic Beaver ... until today.

As we've explained, Ubuntu releases a new version of its operating system every six months, but many wait three months for the first point update to install a slightly more polished option. Last Thursday, Canonical released Ubuntu 20.04.1, and today KDE neon has reported that the operating system becomes based on Focal Fossa, released at the end of April with new features such as improvements in support for the ZFS file system. We didn't mention the Linux 5.4 kernel because it was already included.

KDE neon update 20.04 is already waiting

For new users or those who wish to do a clean install, the new ISO image is now available from the official website of the project. Existing users will see the notification as soon as the operating system starts, but keep in mind that before updating you have to install any pending package updates. Once installed, you have to accept the notice of the notification and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Installation time will vary depending on the speed of the internet connection and the equipment used.

As do not change are components such as the aforementioned Plasma graphics environments (still in Plasma 5.19.4), Qt, Frameworks and KDE applications, since all this software is collected from special repositories. KDE neon will remain based on Ubuntu 20.04 for up to two years, when Ubuntu 22.04 JAJAnimal target is released.
