In the Linux world, when we talk about different types of software we have two options (in this sense): versions that advance faster but may present more problems or LTS versions. The latest version of Plasma It is already on v5.15.2 but, as we say, this version has all the new features that have been released, including the latest bugs that have been found. Which has released KDE is Plasma 5.12.8, an update for the latest LTS version of this attractive and customizable graphical environment.
When they release a new non-LTS version, KDE talks about how they have added a whole week of work and says it has been valuable. In this sense, we can imagine the value of a job when they tell us about six months of improvements, that is, 26 weeks. Is about an update to fix bugs of a version that was released in February 2018, a couple of months before the release of Kubuntu 18.04, the latest LTS version of the operating system. This LTS version is the best option for those who want to install Plasma without running the risk of experiencing the bugs of the new versions, something that I know from experience is likely on some computers.
Plasma 5.12.8 available from the Plasma repository
Right now, the latest version of Plasma not available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but yes in the project. To update, we will first have to add the repository and then update with Software Update. The command to add the repository is as follows:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
As six months go a long way, we cannot mention here all the new features that have been included in Plasma 5.12.8, but we do facilitate the link to the news list and name the packages they have made changes to, which are Breeze, Breeze GTK, Plasma Addons, Info Center, KScreen, KScreenlocker, KWin, libkscreen, PlasmaDesktop (perhaps the most important), Plasma Audio Volume Control, Plasma SDK, plasma-vault, Plasma Workspace and SDDM KCM.
Yesterday when I read the project post, I joked on Twitter saying that every time I read about KDE I feel like I see an ex that I loved very much and that we could not fix ours and be happy? It is clear that I do not think about it and I will not do it with any ex, but I am convinced that, at least, I will try it with KDE next April 18.
Are you one of those who thinks that KDE Plasma is the best graphical environment out there?
Man, the best of the environments no, but of the best yes. Within the comparison at the level of consumption, performance, functionalities and customization XFCE = KDE Plasma. I am more GTK, so I prefer XFCE, BUT it must be said that Plasma in a few years has reached a well-deserved level and is getting better and better.
PS: I always go back to Gnome 🙂
