KDE promises a storm of new features in the software it develops

This week in KDE: the calm before the storm

It's Sunday, and that means that a server has to echo information that it loves, as other users of the site surely love. KDE software. It's about KDE's plans for its future, and today Nate Graham titled his article "The calm before the storm (of new features)." This can only mean one thing: in the next few weeks they will tell us about many new features coming to their Plasma, Applications and Frameworks.

But let's go with what we do have published today. Probably, that calm that they mention in the headline is because this week they have only told us about a new function, one that allows us to change the time zone by clicking on a different one on the digital clock in the applet's pop-up window. Below you have the complete list of news that has advanced to us this week.

New functions

  • It is now possible to change the current time zone by clicking on a different one in the pop-up window of the Digital Clock applet (Plasma 5.19.0).

Fixes coming to KDE

Bug fixes

  • While dragging a file in Dolphin, the cursor hint showing what will happen now changes appropriately if we press different modifier keys (Dolphin 20.04.0 when using Qt 5.15 or later).
  • The files accessed via a URL sftp: // They no longer show fake creation dates when no information on the creation date is available (Dolphin 20.04.0).
  • Okular's Find function now finds the occurrences of the text as they are split over multiple lines (Okular 1.11.0).
  • Filelight now uses the correct font style in its tooltip (Filelight 20.08.0).
  • Fixed a case where Discover could crash during update when a terminal window was opened and used to perform a different type of update (Plasma 5.18.4).
  • When using multiple virtual desktops, adding or removing rows is immediately reflected in the paper applet (Plasma 5.18.4).
  • Fixed various sizing issues with long dates displaying in vertical panels (Plasma 5.18.4).
  • Disabled systray items no longer appear in the Preferences window as "Always on top" under certain circumstances (Plasma 5.18.4).
  • Discover now respects the user-configurable APT update interval on Debian-based systems (Plasma 5.19.0).
  • It is no longer possible to accidentally click invisible buttons in an out-of-focus Sticky Notes widget, because it is now only clickable when visible (Plasma 5.19.0).

Interface improvements

  • When adding a radio in Elisa, the "Title" text field is now focused by default (Elisa 20.04.0).
  • Pin button in systray pop-ups and digital clock are now more appropriately sized and have a nicer icon (Plasma 5.19.0).
  • The monitors for the Baloo file indexer in the KInfoCenter application and the monitor balooctl command now constantly update once per second (Frameworks 5.69).
  • When creating a new file in Dolphin or another KDE application that uses the standard "create new file" menu, the appropriate file extension is now automatically added to the file name (Frameworks 5.69).
  • The "Open With ..." dialog now displays a tooltip with additional information when hovering over application inputs (Frameworks 5.69).

When will all this come to the KDE world?

This week they told us for the first time about a new feature in KDE Applications 20.08. The exact date of their launch is not yet known, but they will arrive in mid-August this year. The KDE Applications 20.04.0 is coming April 23, the same day as Focal Fossa, so Kubuntu 20.04 LTS will not have them available by default. As for the rest of the software, Plasma 5.18.4 will arrive on March 31 and v5.19 of the graphical environment will do it on June 9. The package will be completed by Frameworks 5.69, which will be released on April 11.

We remember that in order to enjoy everything mentioned here as soon as it is available we have to have added the Backports repository from KDE or use an operating system with special repositories like KDE neon.
