KDE Usability & Productivity, Week 78: Konsole Split Arrives in August

KDE Usatility & Productivity week 78

New week in the initiative KDE Usability & Productivity, and with this there are already 78. For those who read this for the first time, it is an initiative of the KDE Community in which new functions are discussed and developed to add to everything related to KDE, among which we have Plasma, Frameworks and Desktop. This week we have been told about something that we have already published en Ubunlog- A new feature in Konsole that will allow us to run more than one instance in the same window.

The post of this week on KDE Usability & Productivity will not be as extensive as those of past weeks. Other times, KDE Community has released dozens of fixes, interface changes, and new features, but this time they only released 8, including the next "Split" function that will come to the Plasma terminal app. Below you have the complete list.

KDE Usability & Productivity relaxes this week

New functions

  • Ability to assign a global keyboard shortcut to turn off the screen (Plasma 5.17).
  • Split mode (divided) in Konsole 19.08.
  • The power saving system settings page offers an option to hibernate after a period of sleep, as long as the system supports it (Plasma 5.17).

Performance fixes and improvements

  • When adding a folder to the Places panel to which we have assigned a custom icon, its entry in the Places panel displays the custom icon correctly (Frameworks 5.60).
  • When deleting multiple files, the notification that tracks the progress reports the total number of files correctly (Frameworks 5.60).

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Added support for filtering old Plasma 4 themes from the store.kde.org downloader (Plasma 5.16.3).
  • The Dolphin 19.08 order selector uses human readable text.
  • When taking a delayed screen capture, Spectacle 19.08 displays an animation in the lower panel indicating the time until the capture takes place.

When will the mentioned things arrive this week in KDE Usability & Productivity

"19.08" means "August 2019", so the Konsole, Dolphin and Spectacle news will arrive, if nothing happens, next month. Next Tuesday they will launch Plasma 5.16.3 and Plasma 5.17 is coming October 15, days before the launch of Eoan Ermine. At the time, if we want to use the latest versions of Plasma, Frameworks and Desktop in Kubuntu (not in KDE Neon which already has it by default), we will have to add the KDE Backports repository to our sources. If you haven't done it already and you like to try the new as soon as it comes out, what are you waiting for?
