KDE Usability & Productivity, Week 80: KDE Applications Getting Ready 19.12

KDE Usabiity & Productivity week 80

And it's already 80. 80 weeks since the starting gun was fired for KDE Usability & Productivity, an initiative that brings together developers, designers and the user community to improve everything related to the KDE world, among which we have the most visible, the Plasma graphical environment, and other less attractive components, such as Frameworks. In addition, some of the changes that will come to the KDE Applications are also collected.

La KDE Usability & Productivity week 80 Nor does it tell us about as many changes as some other week ("only" there are 14 improvements), but they do mention some interesting news like one that allows us to show a QR code to share the password of our WiFi network. On the other hand, although they do not tell us about their functions, they also mention in passing that they are working towards what they will launch in the last month of 2019.

KDE Usability & Productivity, news of week 80

  • Now we can see the QR code of a WiFi network to easily share it with others. (Plasma 5.17).
  • User settings for fonts, cursors, color schemes, etc. can now be synchronized on the SDdM login screen, ensuring a unified image from power on to power off (Plasma 5.17).
  • KRunner's unit conversion capabilities include binary sizes such as Megabytes and gigibytes (Framework 6.61).
  • Okular 1.0.8 has an "Open Containing Folder" function, so, for example, we can easily find a PDF downloaded from the internet.

Bug fixes and performance and interface improvements

  • It is again possible to close the "look & feel" preview window on systems using Qt 5.13 (Plasma 5.16.4).
  • Fixed a recent regression that prevented documents hosted on remote servers from being opened using the KIO command line tool when the URL for the document contained a port number (Plasma 5.16.4).
  • Plasma no longer tries to auto-mount already mounted devices under certain circumstances (Plasma 5.17).
  • Comboboxes in QML-based software now close their open pop-ups when clicking on the same combobox (Frameworks 5.61).
  • Spinboxes in QML-based software now correctly display anti-alias text and are best viewed with fractional scaling factor (Frameworks 5.61).
  • When dragging a selection of rubber bands in Dolphin 19.08, the selection box disappears as expected after right-clicking.
  • Okular 1.8.0 page borders now look good in high DPI mode.
  • The wheel animation that appears when Discover is checking for updates now has arrows pointing in the same direction as the rotation (Frameworks 5.61).
  • Kate's "change input mode" keyboard shortcut is now Ctrl + Alt + V by default, making it possible to use the standard Ctrl + Shift + V shortcut to paste text into Kate's built-in terminal (Frameworks 5.61 ).
  • When Spectacle 19.08 has been automatically minimized during a delayed capture, if we minimize it, the "Take a new screenshot" button will have become a cancel button that shows a progress bar showing what is left for the capture to take place of screen.

When can we enjoy these news?

The dates in which we can enjoy everything mentioned here will vary depending on whether it is Plasma, Frameworks, the version of the KDE Applications or a specific version of a specific app, but the roadmap would look like this:

  • plasma 5.16.4- Will be released on July 30th and should be available on Discover on the same day.
  • plasma 5.16.5- Launching September 3, and should also be coming to Discover
  • plasma 5.17.0: October 15 will be its official launch and should arrive on Discover. The 5 maintenance updates for the 5.17 series will be released on October 22 and 29, November 12, December 3 and January 7.
  • KDE Applications 19.08- They'll be released on August 15, but we'll probably have to wait a few days to see the update in Discover. Like the rest of KDE Applications, v19.08 will have 3 maintenance releases that will be released in September, October and November. In December there will be another major release, KDE Applications 19.12.
  • Framework 5.60- Will appear anytime on Discover (July 13).
  • Framework 5.61: will be released on August 10.

Is there anything from this list that you would like to test already on your operating system?

    Hey.
There are a couple of errors with the Plasma release dates, see the correct dates in https://community.kde.org/Schedules/Plasma_5
The bugs are in the dates of Plasma 5.16.4, Plasma 5.17.0 and the 5.17.x branch
