Keepass, install this fantastic password manager on Ubuntu

About KeePass

In this article we are going to take a look at KeePass, password manager for different operating systems. We will see how to install this software in Ubuntu. This program is a free and freely distributed open source password manager.

This program will help us manage our passwords securely. You can put all your passwords in a database, which is locked with a master key or a key file. This will give us the opportunity to have all passwords protected, so we only have to remember a single master password or select the key file to unlock the entire database.

The databases in which the data will be stored are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (BEA y Twofish).

The passwords stored by this application can be divided into manageable groups. Each group can have an identification icon to be easier to identify. Groups can be divided into subgroups, with which we will obtain an organization in tree format.

KeePass records the creation time, the modification time, the last access time and the expiration time of each password stored. Files can be attached and stored with a password record, or text notes can be entered with password details. Each password record can also have an icon associated with it.

KeePass Features

  • Its greatest strength is the security it offers. The program has a portable version and no installation required. It will allow us to export to TXT, HTML, XML and CSV files.
  • In addition to all of the above, the program will allow us to import from many file formats.
  • We will have support for groups of passwords.
  • We will be able to carry out an intuitive and safe handling of the clipboard.
  • It gives us the opportunity to perform searches and classifications of our passwords and databases.
  • It has multilanguage support.
  • It gives us the ability to generate strong random passwords.
  • These are just some of the features of the program. If you want to know more in depth the options that KeePass makes available to us, we can consult them in your web page.

Master password KeePass

KeePass supports the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES, Rijndael) and the Twofish algorithm to encrypt your databases of passwords. A master password decrypts the entire database, so keep it safe. You can also use key files. Key files provide greater security than master passwords in most cases. You just have to carry the key file with you, for example on a USB or you can burn it to a CD.

Removing the KeePass directory (in case you downloaded the binary ZIP package) or the uninstaller (in case you downloaded the installer package) leaves no trace of KeePass on your system.

Latest version of KeePass

From the repository you will install version 2.35, but on its website you will find version 2.36 that will bring us numerous changes with respect to the previous version. The most notable perhaps is the new function that is added that will help us to do not repeat our passwords in the different sites. It will also give us the function of detecting similar or similar passwords, so that we can change them and thus improve the security of our keys. These two new features can be found in the menu "Edit> Show Entries".

Version 2.36 will provide us with the ability to see the last modified passwords. It will give us the option to configure an expiration date for the master password or it will allow us to deactivate the option of auto-completion of passwords in order to increase our security. You can see more features of this new version in the official website by KeePass.

Thanks a lot. At first I was using kwallet, and it worked for me, but the idea of being able to use an app compatible with all systems seemed like a really cool idea.

The pass generator is great, before it generated them with:
    pwgen 18 100 -n 2 -c 3 -y 2

Very useful to avoid having to use the same pass on all the websites that you enter. Today it is very dangerous.
