Cameron Shorter has announced the release of OSGeoLive 12.0, a major update to the project's specialized distribution, based on Lubuntu, featuring a large collection of free open source geospatial software and world maps.

This version upgrade the operating system to Lubuntu 18.04 which was distributed at the International Conference on Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

About OSGeoLive

OSGeoLive is a project of OSGeo Foundation. The OSGeo Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the development of open source Geospatial Software, its promotion and education.

OSGeoLive it is a standalone bootable DVD, USB drive or Lubuntu-based Virtual Machine, which allows you to test a wide variety of open source geospatial software without the need to install something particular.

It is made up entirely of free software, which allows it to be freely distributed, duplicated and shared.

Provides pre-configured applications for a range of geospatial, including data storage, editing, visualization, analysis and manipulation.

It also contains documentation and sample databases.

This Lubuntu-based operating system is distributed in two live DVD ISO images of approximately 4GB in size each, one standard and one minimal, with fewer software packages.

They are dual-arch and hybrid ISO images that support both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms and can be written to DVD discs or USB sticks.

Some of the best open source geospatial softwares are included in this distribution, such as OpenJUMP, AtlasStyler, GeoPublisher, GRASS GIS, gvSIG, Kosmo, OssimPlanet, Quantum GIS, SAGA GIS, SpatiaLite GIS, and uDig.

It also includes applications for crisis management, navigation, spatial data manipulation, maps, browser clients, and much more.

As mentioned, the distribution is derived from Lubuntu, which means that it borrows its graphical desktop environment.

It is made up of a single taskbar located at the top of the screen, from where you can navigate the main menu, launch applications, switch between virtual workspaces, and interact with running programs.

It is an excellent tool to demonstrate GeoSpatial Open Source, using tutorials and workshops, or providing new potential users.
