Kodi 18.1 Leia now available. How to always keep it updated

One of the novelties that Canonical introduced with Ubuntu 16.04 were the Snap packages that, among other things, will allow us to update the software as soon as its developer has it ready. Until then, and even with many programs, to update to a new version its developer has to deliver it to Canonical, the Mark Shuttleworth team review it and add it to their official repositories, for which it may take some time. Kodi It is available in the official repositories, but if we want to have the latest version we will have to wait ... or not.

If I'm not mistaken, right now we can download Kodi 17.6 from the official repositories, either from Ubuntu Software or with its corresponding command. It's been a while since version 18 is available And not only that, but the first update has already been released. The new version of the famous multimedia center comes with many new features, among which the possibility of emulating games stands out, so its installation is worth at least trying.

How to install Kodi from its repository

Install Kodi from your repository It is very simple. We will only have to add it before installing the program like any other that is available in the official repositories. To do this, we will write the following commands, as we can see in its installation guide:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi

The repository appears as safe and does not give any error, so once installed we can update Kodi without problems as if it were an official repository. Of course, I think you have to take into account what program we are talking about. I say this because Kodi is a very powerful multimedia center, but very delicate and any little thing can make our addon Favorite stops working after an update. If you do not want to take any risks, it is best to always stay in an advanced version of the software, that is, right now in v17.6.

I'm a bit reckless in that regard and I'm already enjoying Kodi 18.1 Leia. Its only fault for me, or almost the only one, is that Kodi it has no equalizer. But hey, for that we have in Linux programs like PulseEffects. Another may be that in Linux we do not have a keyboard shortcut to enter / exit in full screen mode. (As Álvaro points out, the shortcut is Alt Gr + \).

Do you prefer to always have the latest version of a software or a supposedly more stable version?

Leave Kodi definitively, it is very complicated, nothing works as promised, you always have to be configuring things ... like LINUX, it has YEARS to go before it is massive, I don't see this happening for now. This is my humble opinion, tired of not being able to have something that is really working without having to configure things all the time.
