Kodi reaches the minipc thanks to the snap package

kodi 17

Canonical continues to bet on snap packages, a type of package that promises more and more and is gradually becoming universal. As a result of all this, more and more popular programs are adopting this format.

The last of them has been Kodi, the famous multicenter software that already has a snap package to be able to install both on our computer and on any Free Hardware board that accepts Ubuntu Core and snap packages. This makes not only Ubuntu more attractive to users but also Kodi more famous and used.

Kodi is now available through the edge channel of the repository, which means that although we can install it on our computer, it is also an unstable app, since in addition to having a new format, the version to which it corresponds is Kodi 18 Alpha 1. Despite all this, the tests carried out indicate that it works quite well and we can install it on our computer without any problem.

How to install Kodi with the snap format

To install Kodi 18 through the snapd tool we have to open a terminal and write the following:

snap install kodi --edge

Once we have installed this package, to run it we just have to write the following:

snap run kodi

If we had any malfunction, We just have to open a terminal and write the following:

for PERM in alsa avahi-observe hardware-observe locale-control mount-observe network-observe removable-media shutdown system-observe; do sudo snap connect kodi:${PERM}; done

This will be enough to correct the problem, although we remember that the Kodi snap package being in the edge channel, it will go through quite a few changes and bug fixes until it is a stable and optimized snap app.

But the best thing about this news, without a doubt, is the possibility of having Kodi on any device that supports Ubuntu Core, making it more affordable and cheap to have a mediacenter in our house. Do not you think?
