KSmoothDock, great alternative if you are looking for a new Plasma dock

KSmoothDock

Once you've used a dock on a desktop operating system, it's very difficult to go back and stop using it. It may look the same as the bottom bar available in Windows or graphical environments like MATE, but it is not. There are many interesting docks, one of the most used being Plank, but the problem is that not all of them fit well in any graphical Linux environment. If your operating system environment is Plasma 5 and you are not entirely satisfied with what you are using, KSmoothDock it is a dock that you should give a try.

The first thing we have to say about KSmoothDock is that it is not a dock that has just come out of the oven, that is, it has been available for a long time. What has happened recently is that it has received official support to work perfectly on plasma 5. On the other hand, we are talking about free software that is written in C ++ and Qt 5 by the developer Viet Dang and, which is always appreciated, its configuration is simple and will allow us to choose where to put the dock, add components and applications, change the size of the icons, modify their font and the color of the dock itself.

KSmoothDock is now compatible with Plasma 5

KSmoothDock

If you are interested in trying KSmoothDock, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. We make sure we have the full Plasma 5 package installed and the make, the second to be able to compile the software.
  2. Next, we clone the official repository by opening a terminal and typing the following command:
git clone https://github.com/dangvd/ksmoothdock.git
  1. Once the repository is cloned, we write:
cmake src
make
  1. The next step is to install the dock with the command:
sudo make install
  1. Finally, we execute the dock. We can do it from the start menu of our operating system or, if it does not allow us, writing ksmoothdock in the terminal. If you are going to use it always, I recommend adding the dock to the startup applications so that it runs when the operating system starts.

Have you already tried KSmoothDock? How about?
