Kubuntu 17.10 users already have the latest version of Plasma

plasma kde kubuntu

Kubuntu 17.10 users are in luck as they now have the ability to update their version of Plasma. This update would consist of moving to the Plasma 5.12.3 LTS version. This version is a version of the stable branch that not only fixes the bugs that the desktop has but also adds more stability and some functions that users have requested during the last months.

This has been possible thanks to the developers of the Kubuntu Community, a fairly active community although in recent months it has been more focused on KDE Neon than on Kubuntu. Previously we have already talked about the tool that Kubuntu uses to update itself, a tool that other distributions like Linux Mint KDE Edition or KDE Neon uses too. This is a repository known as backports. A repository maintained by the Kubuntu and KDE Community.

Kubuntu backports once again update the Plasma version of the official flavor

The backports repository is a repository that contains the latest KDE as well as tools that have not yet been included in the official Ubuntu repositories. During the last months, this repository has been used to introduce the latest versions of Plasma, something useful for many users who want to be updated to the latest without losing stability and functionality. In this version we will get we will receive a renewed Discover application that will help us to use the famous package manager and desktop programs.

If you are Kubuntu 17.10 or Kubuntu 16.04 users, you can have the latest version by opening a terminal and writing the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports -y
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

This will update our KDE-scented Ubuntu flavor with the latest Plasma.EYE! If we have a version prior to Kubuntu 17.10, not only the desktop will be updated but also the distribution. A simple and fast process if we have a relatively fast Internet connection.
