Not Kubuntu 20.04, but Plasma 5.18 will have a wallpaper contest and you can now participate

Plasma 5.18 wallpaper contest

Virtually all Ubuntu flavors launch a wallpaper contest whose winner will appear in the new version of the operating system. The earliest person to open it, as usual, was Ubuntu Budgieclosely followed by Lubuntu. If we said that Kubuntu did it yesterday we would be lying, since the official KDE version of Ubuntu does not launch this type of contest, but there is a new contest whose winner will appear in Kubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa: the Plasma 5.18 wallpaper contest.

KDE Community reminded us that they did something similar for Plasma 5.16. The winner appeared in that version of the KDE graphical environment and is still the default background, but this will change from February 2020, when the stable version of Plasma 5.18 is released. The next default wallpaper will leave a contest whose bases we can see in this link.

The winner of the contest will appear in Plasma 5.18

KDE Community usually does things in duplicate. By this I mean that when they launch a new version of Plasma, for example, they publish an article talking about its availability and another with all the changes included. With this contest they have done it in a similar way: in the previous link we can see the rules but, unlike the rest of flavors, the images have to be delivered on another page, in this to be more specific.

Regarding the rules, the following stands out:

  • Images can be delivered until January 15 at midnight in UTC (01:00 in Spain).
  • The image must be your own and licensed under CC-BY-SA-4.0.
  • A maximum of three images may be submitted.
  • All images must be in PNG format.
  • The minimum size has to be 4K, which is 3840 × 2160, but they prefer it to be 5K (5120 × 2880). A moving size image can be delivered for Plasma Mobile (1080 × 2280).
  • All images containing racist, sexist, degrading or inappropriate content will be immediately rejected. Any third party image with rights will also be disqualified. Disqualifications will be final and cannot be appealed.
  • They suggest no text or logos; they do not forbid it, but they tend to be liked less and have less chance of winning.

UPDATED: As we were writing this article, the KDE Community posted an entry in which they tell us about another prize for the winner: a TUXEDO InfinityBook Pro 14.

Plasma 5.18 will be released next February 11, will be available in the Backports repository from the same day and will be a major release that will be included by default in Kubuntu 20.04.
