Kubuntu could have the snap format as the default format for installing applications

plasma kde kubuntu

The next version of Ubuntu poses big changes and big challenges for the development team. While we knew that the 32-bit version will cease to exist, we now know that possibly the snap format is established as a defined format or at least they will work on it.

But the version of Ubuntu 18.04 will not be the only version that has it but so will the official Ubuntu MATE and Kubuntu flavors.

Ubuntu MATE already has the predefined snap format, so the change to Ubuntu MATE will be a mere procedure, something else is Kubuntu. The official flavor with KDE was not predisposed to it, but other developments with KDE and Plasma are working on it so it seems that finally Kubuntu will have the snap format.

One of the first distributions to do this will be KDE Neon, a distribution that is based on Ubuntu but has KDE as its main and only desktop. An official distribution of the KDE project that is used to show the latest project news. This means that KDE and Plasma will be in snap format and can therefore be used by the Kubuntu team.

The snap format will allow us to have the latest version of the desktop without having compatibility problems with other programs or in its operation, something interesting and useful for many. But this will not make other formats and classic repositories work out of Kubuntu or any other official Ubuntu flavor.

Everything will be compatible (unless you try to install packages of the same program in different formats) and that means that each user can choose whether to use the snap format, stick to deb format or lock the machine to only support installation through repositories. However Which method do you choose?

It's a shame that in the end the Kubuntu team opted for this format. Sure, I say it from my point of view, because personally it is not to my liking. Instead of improving what already exists, create a new subdivision and throw away, in this case on Canonical's side. Luckily in the world there is variety. And look how curious, thinking of going back to Windows.
