Lightworks passes the world of Free Software hand in hand with Ubuntu

lightworks

Yesterday the latest version of Lightworks, a very popular video editor within its genre since unlike others, Lightworks does not edit the video in a linear fashion. The great novelty that Lightworks brings in this new version is that for the first time an official version is released for the Gnu / Linux distributions, especially for Ubuntu and Fedora, the most emblematic distributions within the package formats, deb and rpm. But this does not mean that Lightworks fire your traditional business. For the moment, Lightworks it will combine the two forms, it will have a free version and a professional or paid version. The difference between these versions is that in the free version we can only export two formats:  MPEG4 / H.264 and with a resolution of 720, limited thing but that goes very well to upload videos on the web.

Requirements to get Lightworks working on Ubuntu

One of the bad things I've seen in incorporating Lightworks on Ubuntu It is the establishment of some requirements to function, which is also normal in a video editor, but it does not have much logic than its competitors, OpenShot o Kdenlive don't have it. To make Lightworks work we will need a computer with Ubuntu or some derivative in its highest version, that is, Ubuntu 13.04 or Ubuntu 13.10. We will have to have more than 3 Gb of ram to make it work and a 64-bit processor, i7 or equivalent minimum. Regarding space requirements, Lightworks it occupies very little, only 200 mb for its installation, however it is necessary to have enough space for the production of the video. We also need a powerful graphics card, one that has 1GB of ram all by itself and a resolution of 1960 x 1080. They also require a network connection for the program to launch the record itself. It is only necessary the first time the program is opened.

Lightworks Installation

Por el momento Lightworks It is not in the official repositories, nor do I think there will be time for them to be found in Ubuntu 14.04 so the only way at the moment is to download the deb package from its official website and install it using Gdebi or by opening a terminal, go to the folder where the deb package is and write

sudo dpkg -i lightworks_package_name

This will install the program Lightworks.

Opinion

Personally, I think it is very good news that large software companies or already classic software products have a version or are entering the Free software. However, I consider that this version is more to cover the file than to delve into Free Software since the requirements are high, as if it were a professional version but the best possible result is very small. The user will wonder and rightly Why should I use Lightworks and spend a lot on a pc that meets the requirements if I can edit on a netbook with Openshot? It is one of the first questions that comes to mind and that is not answered. What do you think? Do you think Lightworks for Ubuntu is worth it or not?

I had been following this since the beta I see that it is much better now. But is it free software or just free?

Hello Leillo1975, in many news it comes as free software, but now looking at the changelog I have seen that it is only free. It seems that even more twists and turns are needed for Free Software users.

Why do you say hand in hand with Ubuntu? What has ubuntu had to do with the launch of LightWorks?

By the way, I just installed it on KaOS with an intel hd 2500 graphics and it works excellent http://yoyo308.com/2014/01/31/llega-lightworks-11-5-estable-para-linux-editor-profesional-de-video-usado-en-hollywood/

Hello Yoyo, first of all, thank you very much for reading us and for commenting, I have been reading you for a long time and I follow you through Espaciolinux and on your blog, and it is an honor for me that you comment here. Regarding "From the hand of Ubuntu", it is a cliché, I do not mean that Ubuntu cooperates in the program, only that Lightworks releases the version for Ubuntu and Linux Mint, as well as Fedora and derivatives. By the way, very good work with KaOS and that speed in build is very good. As for the requirements, do you meet the rest of the requirements? It would be good to know if in addition to the graphics card, there is some requirement that can be "skipped" such as the processor or the ram memory. Thank you very much and greetings.

Well, I don't have an i7 or AMD equivalent as they say on their website, I have an i5 3330 at 3.2 GHz and yes, 8 GB of RAM at 1600 MHz

There is a lot of daring in wanting to compare what Lightworks offers that is professional level with Openshot that is little more than a toy.
What will be the next thing to compare Gimp with Photoshop? Please…

PROFESSIONAL? The result of a job will depend entirely on the person and not on the material used to achieve it. Mozart composed on instruments that, today, I very much doubt that they are considered PROFESSIONAL and look at the result of his work. Have a Steinway & Sons
    it won't make you Mozart.

Uncle! I think you have gone too far with the comparison. Openshot is what Movie Maker is in Windows… And we are talking about a program, Lightworks, which is used for film production, something that goes beyond pasting photographs of a trip. Which is at the level of AVID, Premiere and Final Cut. What's more, there is a free version that is simpler and the paid version, which is supposed to be valid for an editing professional, and as I said, not to make a video with the photographs of a vacation to Cancun.

    A greeting!

It is a good software, but it has many flaws, when rendering a video of more than 20 minutes duration, the program closes and I do not think it is the machine because it is running on a computer with an i3 processor at 2.53GHz with four cores , 6GB of ram and a 2GB video card. Also many times it does not place the audio on the tracks at the end. It has several details, hopefully you will check them soon. It is the first program that gives me problems here in Ubuntu: /
